Hi, my name is Wayne Hackman. In 2025, I aim to install internet and electrical power in homes and schools across Kenya, where power and connection are currently unavailable. This year, I've already given away seven power solutions to needy causes, valued at $200 each, and connected Molo Street Children, Turi Children's Project, Matumaini Rehabilitation Centre, and Turi Sulgwita Primary School to the internet for $200 PCM.
To date, I've managed to raise this money through my personal giving and the generosity of some amazing donors (Ian and Wendy Wright, Independent News Media & The Foster Family) who have helped purchase some of the electrical boxes.
I'm now embarking on the expensive part of the project. Riding an electric motorbike across Kenya while installing solar power as we go. The ride will take place in early December 2025, and I've estimated I need to raise about $20,000 to achieve the following:
1. Install large solar power systems at the start and finish of the ride.
Start: Solar at Mango Tree School - Homa Bay, Kenya
Finish: Solar at A Rocha (Conservation Trust) - Watamu, Kenya
Approximately 1.2 million Kenyan Shillings (10,000USD)
2. Install six Smaller Solar Solutions in unconnected family homes during the ride. Aproximaty 200,000Kenyan Shillings (1500USD)
3. Help fund the journey, including transport, food, accommodation and equipment. 450,000 Kenyan Shillings (3500USD)
This is a big ask, but you will be bringing light to those who have none.
My last small solar system was installed in a family home. They use kerosene lamps and have to charge their phones for 20 Kenyan Shillings a day. For a small family that earns less than 1,200 KES a week (approximately 10 USD). Spending 560 KES per month on charging phones to stay connected is excessive. Installing a simple 100W solar system means they will be saving 560Kes a month.
Additionally, one of their children had red, raw eyes. It turns out that the fumes from the oil lamp were affecting the poor child's eyesight, causing them to stop using the lamp and move around in the darkness at night. A small, self-built 200USD system changed this family's life overnight.
I'm not very good at asking for help, but could you possibly find a small donation in your heart to see if we can change even more lives this year.
Thanks for considering.
