Hello, my name is Jay. I am 22 years old, and I have recently been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called Ewing sarcoma (stage 4). I was born and raised in New Zealand, and after finishing college I moved to Australia to pursue my dream of becoming a professional rugby league player. Unfortunately, that dream has been put on hold.
Since my diagnosis, I have been informed that my treatment journey will involve a minimum of 8–9 months of intensive chemotherapy, along with radiation and surgery. During this time, I am unable to work full time, yet I still have ongoing financial responsibilities, including weekly rent (317)and weekly car payments(140)(2200)monthly including all bills. As a family, we have never been comfortable asking for financial help, and I especially don’t want my parents to carry this burden or worry about the costs associated with my illness. That is why I have chosen to do this quietly and independently.
Unfortunately due to being in Australia and not being an Australian citizen, i fall between the cracks of getting any sort of payment from the government.
My prognosis for long-term survival is uncertain, so once I have completed my chemotherapy journey, part of this go fund me might support a victory holiday back to New Zealand. Other than this, majority will go toward essential needs. This includes travel so my family can visit me during treatment. My parents live in New Zealand, my sister lives in the United States, and I am currently in Australia. Being able to see them occasionally would mean more to me than I can express during this difficult time. I am also scheduled to receive a medical port, which costs approximately $10,000. This is necessary to allow chemotherapy to be delivered safely and effectively to my heart. Additionally, my mum has already accumulated significant expenses traveling to be with me, including accommodation, food and time off work. My hope is to ease this financial pressure so she can head back home and not have to stress.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and for your kindness during one of the most challenging periods of my life.
