A Doctor’s Light in Gaza’s Darkness

Hello to all kind souls and supporters of justice around the globe.
Though this is not the first plea you've seen from Gaza, I hope you’ll take a moment to hear my voice, that of a doctor still holding onto hope amid destruction.
My name is Dr. AbdelQader Wishah, a general physician from Gaza. For the past four years, I’ve worked tirelessly in the Emergency Department at Al-Aqsa Hospital, saving lives under unimaginable pressure. I’ve trained new doctors, volunteered at Al-Awda Hospital, and taught medical students at Al-Azhar University. Medicine isn’t just my profession; it’s my purpose.
Before the war, I had a dream: to travel to Germany and specialize in vascular surgery, a field desperately needed in Gaza. I had already completed two levels of German, was just days away from taking my A2 language exam, and had received initial approval to continue my medical journey in North Rhine-Westphalia.
I was almost there. I had been saving every dollar for the blocked account required to apply for the visa, around $15,000. But then the war changed everything.
This war shattered not only buildings but also futures. Prices skyrocketed. Food and water became scarce. Salaries disappeared. In nearly two years of war, I’ve received less than $2,000 in total. My savings, years of effort, were spent trying to keep my family alive. I am the sole provider, and I lost my father to cancer during this war because he was denied the chance to seek treatment outside Gaza. I was on duty at the hospital when I got the news.
Today, I turn to you with a humble request. I am raising funds to help me rebuild what was once within reach — to complete my specialization abroad and return to serve a wounded nation. Your support will help cover :
- The blocked account required for my visa.
- Language course fees.
- Visa and travel expenses.
- Living and housing costs.
- My urgent current needs, which I can no longer meet alone.
Despite everything, I still believe in life. I still believe in healing. And I still believe in the power of humanity.
From my heart, thank you for reading. Thank you for standing with Gaza. And thank you for giving me hope when I need it most.
We, too, love life, just like you.
