February 2025, I went to my local animal shelter for my usual volunteer shift, having no idea my life was about the change. There had been a new puppy intake, and the moment I stepped into the kennel and a timy but determined runt with mobility issues clambered onto my lap, I knew she was the one.

Pixie, as I named her, is the sweetest, most affectionate dog I have ever known. She loves cuddles and hugs, brings "gifts" of toys (or shoes!) when greeting someone, and radiates joy wherever she goes. The beach is her favourite place in the world, she enjoys listening to birds, and she squeals with excitement and wiggles all over the place everytime guests come over.

Unfortunately, this bright spirit is burdened with challenging disabilities. She has a genetic eye condition that makes her blind in all but very dim lighting, and she was born with severe hip issues that affect her mobility and cause pain. She has adapted well to her impaired vision but her hips are getting worse with age. At just 10 months old she was diagnosed with severe double hip dysplasia. Without treatment, she will decline quickly and her life will be shortened considerably. However, there is hope. Because she is young, active and slim, she is a candidate for femoral head ostectomy (FHO). This surgery will eliminate or greatly reduce her pain, allowing her to live the long, happy life she deserves.
