A Dignified Farewell for Jose Luis Sedano

On behalf of my uncle, Jose Luis Sedano, who recently passed away on February 12th, 2026, I have set up a memorial page in his honor for which the funds raised will go towards costs of services and final entombment with dignity and grace.

His passing was brought on by a serious stroke in September, which affected most of his organs and mind. Due to complications, his body simply could not fight or heal any longer. Not only that, but the loss of his sister, Consuelo Sedano de Sousa, my mother, 9 months prior in May, was profoundly more painful to him than his physical aliments. His heart was broken.

It was unimaginable to him , to all of us, that his sister was gone. He would often ask me, "What are we going to do?"

The passing of my mother, and now my uncle's absence is beyond painful I am overwhelmed with emotion.
I am forever grateful for the kindness and generosity of those whom have supported thus far. Family , friends that have known my uncle and myself and have shared in his life and the new friends that have blossomed. Thank you.

A close cousin of my uncle wrote a perfect description of him, which I share with you here:

Jose Luis was born in Mexico City and immigrated to Los Angeles with his parents and his beloved sister, Consuelo. Deeply rooted in their Catholic faith, the family devoted themselves to service within the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, holding numerous civic and parish roles throughout their lives. That spirit of faith, generosity, and community remained central to Jose Luis’s character. He graduated from Bishop Mora Salesian High School in East Los Angeles and went on to earn his Bachelor’s degree from the California Institute of the Arts. He later completed his Master’s degree at Harvard University, reflecting a lifelong dedication to learning, creativity, and thoughtful engagement with the world.

Jose Luis had an enduring love for photography. Among his most treasured work were the close-up photographs he captured of Jacqueline Kennedy during John F. Kennedy’s presidential campaign visit to Los Angeles. These images, along with many others, are preserved in the archives of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston, a lasting testament to his artistic vision and his quiet presence at meaningful moments in history.

Prior to his graduate studies, during the Vietnam War, Jose Luis joined the newly established Peace Corps and served four years in the mountains of Peru. There, he educated local farmers in improved methods of potato cultivation, embracing the culture wholeheartedly. He quickly learned Quechua and developed a fondness for sharing a celebratory Pisco Sour on special occasions. His service in Peru reflected his humility, curiosity, and deep commitment to helping others.

Jose Luis also had a gentle affection for cats, which seemed to appear from nowhere to greet him, drawn to his calm and kind nature.

He will forever be remembered for his tireless dedication to conserving and promoting the arts and cultural life that form such a vital part of Los Angeles communities. He volunteered countless hours preserving historical sites and championing cultural awareness and conservation. His work strengthened the fabric of the community and enriched the lives of many.
His dedication to his parents and sister was undeniable.

Jose Luis’s faith, intellect, creativity, and devotion to service leave a legacy that will endure. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

I’m willing to bet that St. Peter assigned Jose Luis to oversee the entire cat department and he couldn’t be happier.

May he rest in eternal peace.
