It’s with a heavy heart, we share the passing of Reuben Reyes Valenzuela on January 27, 2026, at 6:15 pm, following a brave battle with pulmonary fibrosis and heart disease—a direct result of years of inhaling smoke and protecting our wilderness from devastating wildfires.

Reuben dedicated over 30 years to the United States Forest Service fighting wildfires, putting his health on the line to keep our communities safe. He started his career at 18 years old and ended up becoming a captain and was a part of the Hotshots. Reuben lived by the code of service, but sadly, that service came at a high physical cost.

We have confirmed that Reuben’s life insurance benefits are approved. However, the processing period for these benefits will take several months. Funeral homes and memorial services require immediate payment, and we find ourselves in a difficult position where we cannot wait for the insurance to arrive to honor him properly.

We are seeking $6000 to cover the immediate costs of:

* Funeral Home Services & Professional Fees.

* A Memorial Service honoring his firefighting legacy.

Once the insurance funds are disbursed, we intend to pay this kindness forward.
