Honor Army Veteran Nelson Moon: Help Us Give a Hero the Goodbye He Deserves

My name is Bre, and I am Nelson Moon's younger sister.

I created this fundraiser to help our family cover funeral and memorial expenses for my brother, an Honorable U.S. Army veteran who is currently fighting an aggressive and rare signet ring cell adenocarcinoma affecting his esophagus, stomach, pancreas, and omentum, with possible lymph node involvement.

Nelson has spent his life serving others—first through his military service in Kuwait and Iraq, and later by supporting and caring for his family and friends. He has always been the person people could depend on, and now our family is facing the heartbreaking reality of preparing for the possibility of losing him.

The funds raised will be used to cover funeral and memorial service expenses and help us provide Nelson with the dignified farewell he deserves. Any remaining funds will be donated to organizations that support veterans and advocate for improved care and support for those who have served.

Thank you for taking the time to read Nelson's story and for any support, prayers, or shares you can provide during this incredibly difficult time.

---

In 2001, Nelson Glenn Moon answered his country's call and joined the United States Army. Like so many young Americans after a nation-changing moment in history, he swore an oath to defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. That oath took him far from home, serving in Kuwait and Iraq during a difficult and dangerous chapter in our nation's history.

When Nelson completed his service and returned home as an Honorable U.S. Veteran, he did not come back seeking recognition or praise. He came home and did what he had always done: he took care of the people he loved.

He helped support our mother. He watched over me, his baby sister. He remained the same gentle giant his family and lifelong friends had always known—a man whose bear hugs could make someone feel safe, valued, and loved. To many of us, Nelson wasn't just a friend. He was family. He was the person you called when you needed help, the person who showed up without being asked, and the person who somehow made life a little better simply by being in it.

But years after his military service ended, Nelson found himself facing a battle none of us could have imagined.

He was diagnosed with an extraordinarily rare and aggressive signet ring cell adenocarcinoma involving his esophagus and gastroesophageal junction, with known involvement of his stomach, pancreas, and omentum, and possible lymph node involvement. What began as a search for answers quickly became a race against time.

His journey through the medical system has been heartbreaking. He was initially seen through the VA before being sent to Walter Reed, where his cancer was formally diagnosed. He was then transferred back for treatment planning, only to learn that his rare cancer required resources beyond what was available. Eventually, he was referred to WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center.

By the time treatment began, nearly two months had passed.

When chemotherapy finally started, Nelson suffered a rare and severe reaction to 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), one of the medications used in his treatment. The reaction triggered seizures and led to a devastating decline. There were moments when hope seemed within reach—small improvements that gave us reason to believe he could turn a corner. But each step forward was followed by another setback.

Today, Nelson remains in intensive care. He has endured multiple seizures, his kidneys are failing, and the strong, determined man who fought through every challenge placed before him is now facing the toughest battle of his life.

Nothing could have prepared our family for how quickly this happened.

Just two months ago, we were focused on treatment and hope. Now we are facing the possibility of saying goodbye.

As his little sister, I am struggling to put into words what Nelson means to me.

My brother has been my protector, my friend, my partner for antique hunting trips, and my teammate for the video games we grew up playing together. He has been there through every stage of my life. He celebrated my successes, helped me through my struggles, and never hesitated to put the needs of others before his own.

For most of my life, Nelson was the person I could count on when things went wrong. The person who would answer the phone. The person who would show up. The person whose presence alone could make a difficult day easier to face.

Now I find myself wishing I could do more for him.

As our family prepares for the unthinkable, we are seeking help to provide Nelson with the funeral and memorial service he deserves. We want to honor a man who served his country, loved his family fiercely, and touched the lives of countless friends over the years.

If Nelson's story moves you, please consider making a donation of any size. Every contribution helps us provide a farewell worthy of the life he lived and eases the burden on a family facing an overwhelming loss.

If you are unable to donate, please consider sharing this campaign. Sometimes a share reaches the person who is able to help, and that simple act of kindness can make all the difference.

Nelson spent his life showing up for others—as a soldier, a son, a brother, and a friend.

Today, I am asking others to show up for him.

Thank you for helping us honor his life, his service, and the legacy of love he leaves behind.
