A Different World Initiative

Good morning friends and family. Some of you know that I work at Weequahic High School. Most of you know the impact that Groove and College has had on me and because of that, i’m trying to put together an idea called the “Different World” initiative.
Although I never attended a HBCU, I recognize that they have a history of doing a better job at providing a higher education to our people. As a community, we see the contributions that these institutions have made when we see the lawyers, doctors, educators, business owners and entrepreneurs who attribute their success to having attended these schools.
I hope to inspire my students to seek higher education at one of these institutions by providing them with exposure to HBCU culture and information. I’m reaching out to you because I need your help. The first thing I am trying to do is assist our senior class in raising funds to take our students to Morgan State University for homecoming on Saturday Oct.7. The International Office of Groove Phi Groove has pledged to help us with this task as part of our College Tour Initiative by matching the funds we raise up to $2000.
The second part of the Program is what I am calling “A Different World Day”. The target date for this program is Friday Nov. 17. During this day, I would like to set up a day party at my school for the seniors. During this event they will complete the HBCU college app with the cost of that application being paid for by the funds I raise with your assistance. my goal is to raise $1000, which would allow me to pay the application fee for 50 students. During this day party we will do things like watch episodes of A Different World, The Movie School Daze and other shows that encapsulate aspects of HBCU culture and student life. I also want to provide the students with HBCU shirts to wear during the day party. I am reaching out to you and your chapters to assist me in making this happen.
Thank you for your support in helping to provide this experience for our young brothers and sisters.
