Mia was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in July of 2017. When she was brought into the ER, after being misdiagnosed with a virus by her pediatrician the previous day, she was slipping into a diabetic coma and just hours from death. She was transported down to San Diego, where she spent two days in the PICU, followed by a few more days in the pediatric wing before she was released to go home.
Learning how to manage Mia’s blood sugar levels and overall T1D care has been a huge learning curve for our family, and it is something we are still working on each and every day.
While we are thankful for the tools and technology that allow us to provide Mia with her ongoing care, they are just that: tools and technology. Technology is never perfect, and we are always looking to add additional tools to our T1D Arsenal.
One of the main tools we have been working to add, since Mia’s diagnosis, is a Diabetic Alert Dog (DAD). Our family feels that a DAD is just one of many tools that we can use to support Mia and her daily T1D management. While we were in San Diego, for our initial hospital stay, our attending Endocrinologist suggested that we look into a DAD for Mia, and because of that respected opinion and recommendation, we have pursued this option ever since.
After extensive research, we decided to go through the Canine Hope for Diabetics non-profit. There are many fees associated with raising and training a prospective DAD, as well as continuing expenses after being matched with a dog, none of which is covered by insurance.
We previously had a You Caring account set up for Mia, and are so thankful for the friends, family, and other community members who have previously donated. Unfortunately, You Caring has since merged gofundme and subsequently removed our fundraiser. Therefore, we have chosen to create a new account, for the remaining funds, and continue our fundraising efforts through this platform.
I am thrilled to say that we have already raised $12,500 toward our DAD, a large portion of which came from a very giving foundation within our community. However, we still have about $8000+ left to raise, to complete the required training, initial vaccination, and other additional fees required; we will also be using the remainder of the funds to purchase initial items such as a kennel, cots, dog food, and supplies, among other items, as well as setting aside some of the funds for any vaccinations or other expenses that we expect to arise in the future.
We ask that you consider donating to Mia’s fundraiser if you are so inclined. To keep up with Mia, her daily T1D care, her non-stop dance life, our continued fundraising efforts, and our progress with our DAD training, please find her on Facebook by searching “Mia - Type 1 Dancer,” or by following the link to her full story below.

Thank you so much to everyone, for the incredible amount of love and support that has been provided to our family so far. We would love it if you could share not only this fundraiser but her official Type 1 Dancer page as well.
