I’m starting this GoFundMe for my best friend and her husband, Kerry and Ryan Hickman.

Kerry and Ryan are amazing parents. Ryan has coached youth soccer for years, and together they’ve spent countless hours supporting their six kids through school, sports, dance, and even jiu-jitsu for a bit. They’ve always found a way to make things work, no matter how hard life gets. But right now, they’re struggling and need help to stay on their feet financially.

On July 11, 2024, Ryan went in for a routine reverse shoulder repair with an added carpal tunnel surgery. The next day, he awoke on a ventilator with unbearable pain in his right hand. Instead of healing, his hand developed Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), a rare and serious nerve condition that causes constant pain signals long after an injury or surgery. It is one of the most painful chronic conditions known and is often described as burning, stabbing, or electric pain that can worsen with even light touch or temperature changes.

Ryan has lost the use of his dominant hand and can no longer do simple tasks like buttoning a shirt, zipping pants, or enjoying his passion: cooking. He lives every day in pain that most of us can’t imagine. Despite being on the highest doses of pain and nerve medications, the burning, swelling, and sensitivity never stop.

On April 7, 2025, Ryan had a third surgery, hoping for relief. Just four days later, while still recovering, he was let go from his job. He has been unable to return to work because of his condition and the strong medications he needs daily.

Kerry and Ryan have used all their savings and every community resource available. Their six children have had to adjust to major changes, emotionally, financially, and at home. The loss of income and Ryan’s constant pain have taken a heavy toll. He has always been proud to provide for his family, and now that burden falls on Kerry, who is doing everything she can to hold things together while caring for everyone.

Ryan faces another surgery on October 20, 2025. The family needs help catching up on bills and keeping their home, especially with the holidays coming. They are doing everything they can to get through this, but they need support to make it through the rest of the year.
