A fitting wheelchair
Donation protected
Hi, I’m Tyler and I have a condition called Functional Neurological Disorder, which causes me to have seizures daily, episodes of muscle weakness, and causes my walking to be unsafe and unstable. I also have an undiagnosed condition which causes joint dislocations, hypermobility, and general body dysfunction. In the last three years, I have become a full-time ambulatory wheelchair user because of these.
My first wheelchair was an off the shelf Karma wheelchair, which was incredibly heavy and unsupportive. Due to my conditions, my ability to self propel worsened but I was becoming more dependent on my wheelchair regularly.
In 2024, I got my first custom wheelchair: a Rogue ALX. This wheelchair was fit incorrectly and in turn has caused my hip and shoulder issues to progressively get worse.
In early 2025, I realised I needed to get a better fitting chair, one that was no longer too wide and too short. I needed a chair that was my measurements, and supportive to help my joints rather than cause constant pain. I realised this needed to happen soon, because I have been missing essential education to pass my A-Level courses.
Recently, I found a second hand RGK Tiga on EBay, which my Uncle paid for and I am now paying him back. I currently use this chair are my day-to-day chair, and a skate chair for WCMX. This chair is still not the correct sizing for me, and I am still having constant nerve pain in my back and legs, but it’s better than what I had.
With my PIP back payment, the money I sell my Rogue ALX for and some money I put aside with each PIP payment that I get, I’m hoping to get a custom wheelchair. My current options are a Quickie Nitrum and a Tilite TR/TRA. However, both of these chairs can rack up to being very expensive and I cannot fund it entirely, so I am turning to fundraising. I plan to attend “runs” and promote this fundraiser as much as possible. I am selling things I no longer use, and saving money everywhere I can.
