A Community Research Platform to End COVID-19

About C19.ai

We know that each case of coronavirus is unique, yet we don’t treat them as such. We don’t have enough information to know which treatments will work and which won’t for a person newly diagnosed with COVID-19. This means that clinicians don’t have the tools they need to optimally care for patients during the pandemic and results in lives lost.

The coronavirus situation is ever-changing, with new public health, news, and research messages arriving daily. There has been only one constant: for every four people that have recovered and been released from care, one person has died. As of May 4th, this number was 1.1 million recoveries compared with 250,000 deaths.

Over the past decade, the ever-decreasing costs of generating genomic and other “-omic” molecular data sets have laid the research foundation for a new era of precision medicine, one in which health systems can truly personalize and optimize care for an individual patient. We can apply this same foundation to decode care for coronavirus using the patient’s genome, the virus genome, and a detailed clinical history. We now have the tools to translate this knowledge base into real-time, life-saving approaches to improve outcomes for people with COVID-19.

The C19.ai Platform

Led by genetic researcher and technologist Gabe Richman, MS-MBA, and advised by David Poston, former Chief Operating Officer of the Allen Institute, researchers at Omic have developed a community research platform that uses AI to combine clinical and molecular patient information to speed up the development of new drugs, vaccines, and personalized care plans based on the best outcomes of patients that have come before.

This is the C19.ai platform, empowering the research community with AI to shortcut the 2019 novel coronavirus. It is powerful, accurate, scalable, and delivers rapid results. Crucially, the C19.ai platform can integrate a person’s personal genetic information, their specific coronavirus sequence, and medical records history to show treatment paths and outcomes for highly similar patients within 15 minutes.

Platform Validation

According to a leading healthcare executive:

"COVID-19 has exposed the weakness in the U.S. public health infrastructure. Disparate individuals and institutions are attempting to address the crisis through disjointed efforts. Concerned organizations such as Johns Hopkins, GISAID, and the New York Times have stepped in to publish molecular, clinical, and population health data sets. Individual doctors tweet or build websites to share first-hand clinical evidence.

While useful, these numerous independent efforts create duplicative work and delays in potentially life-saving innovations. They lack the full power of aggregating, validating, and extracting insights from data through artificial intelligence. The gaps caused by these independent efforts can blind all from public health realities and slow decision making. Research institutions, health systems, and governments are missing a centralized platform to aggregate these disparate data with advanced clinical and molecular toolsets for stakeholders.

C19.ai will support a more robust public health infrastructure for public and private decision-makers to address the COVID-19 pandemic through the use of digital health and AI technologies. Users can unify and structure clinical data, form community-derived research hypotheses, and collaborate on deep modeling and analyses. With this, health leaders and the scientific community can address the most critical issues we face in this pandemic.”

What We Can Accomplish with Your Support

The team reports that the platform has already been optimized and validated to show its performance and accuracy. The system works, it just needs the fuel to run.

How we’ll do this:

1. Collect and integrate clinical, genomic, and SARS-CoV-2 data from community volunteers, research consortiums, and clinical trials (target: 100,000 patients with COVID-19);

2. Deidentify and make the data immediately available for the broad community of biologists, clinicians, and coders to hack on;

3. Address the key problems we face in the current and future waves of the pandemic using artificial intelligence.

No one will end this pandemic for us. But we can do it together. C19.ai operates as a research collective. We provide the forum for the scientific and medical communities as well as all of us to stop COVID-19. We have assembled the underlying platform needed for researching how to help the soon-to-be millions afflicted, as well as the tools and community support in order to beat the virus. We just need you to help us save as many people as we can.

Meet the Team

The C19 team, powered by Omic , is a collection of talented engineers and scientists from all over the world. We have PhD geneticists, biophysicists, deep learning AI developers, and integration experts from top consulting companies, to name a few. Our team is bonded by the mission to give every patient a personalized treatment path. This is particularly critical in the age of COVID-19, where the medical and scientific community are racing to learn as much about this virus as possible and how to give patients the best possible treatments and outcomes.
