A child enters foster care every two minutes in the United States, according to the 2014 AFCARS study. Of the 415,000 children in foster care, 25% are introduced as infants, 73% will experience some form of physical, emotional and/or sexual abuse, 15% will receive a high school diploma, 3% will graduate from college, 14% will serve time in state prison, and 60% of females will become pregnant within two years of leaving the foster care system.
Our group, made of five Diablo Valley College students, started this journey rallying together to fundraise to send one foster child to Royal Family Kids Camp. To our gratefulness we ended up reaching this goal within 5 days! We became so inspired and blessed we decided to try and send a second child to the camp upping our goal from $1000 to $2000. We could not believe what happened next, we ended up raising $2000 a week and a half before our deadline of November 30th. We are so thankful and so blessed to have everyone who has supported us through this journey so far. Whether that be donating to the page, sharing it, or just spreading the word about our cause, we could not thank you enough. We believe in giving back and helping in anyway possible and since we still have time left we do not want to give up just yet!
Collectively, the camp costs close to $60,000 to facilitate each year, and each child requires $1,000 in order to attend the week long camp, which pays for (but not limited to): new clothes, bussing, sleeping bags, pillows, “birthday parties,” toys, "princess tea parties," a first pair of new shoes for many foster children, among a multitude of other activities. Beyond the months of prior planning, the camp is packed into five days of focusing on encouraging the kids, allowing them a safe and unworried environment, and often offering a place for siblings to reconnect after being placed in seperate foster homes.
The camp is facilitated by Royal Family Kids, a Christian-rooted non-profit organization that is motivated to improve the conditions and provide a lasting impact on the lives of children in the foster care system. Each year, Royal Family Kids confronts and reconciles the tragedies of child abuse, focusing to provide one week of “royalty” to the children of the foster system. Please help a disadvantaged child experience a week, of light, love, and joy. If you cannot afford to donate then share, because you might know someone who can! Helping in anyway is greatly appreciated and we hope you can be a part in our fight for these kids! Thank you!
