A Children’s Book to Help Families Talk About Cancer

My name is Ethlyn Buckmire, and I’m creating a children’s book born out of something I never expected to experience: cancer during pregnancy.
When I was unwell, my biggest worry wasn’t just my health. It was my children. How do you explain cancer to a child in a way that doesn’t terrify them, but still tells the truth?
This book was written to answer that question.
The story is told through the eyes of my 9-year-old child, capturing how illness feels from a child’s perspective. It’s honest, gentle, and hopeful, and it’s designed to help families talk openly about cancer, treatment, fear, and love when life suddenly becomes very complicated.
The goal is to publish and distribute this book to families, hospitals, schools, and support services, so children who are facing similar situations don’t feel confused, frightened, or alone.
I’m raising funds to cover the costs of editing, illustration, printing, and distribution. Any support will go directly toward bringing this book to life and getting it into the hands of the families who need it most.
This project is deeply personal, but its purpose is wider than my own family. I truly believe it can offer comfort, understanding, and reassurance to many children navigating a parent’s illness.
Thank you for reading, for sharing, and for supporting this project in any way you can. Every contribution helps turn this very real experience into something that can help others.
