He was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder called Gardner's syndrome, which has caused a large, cancerous tumor to grow on his back. Gardner's syndrome is a type of familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) that leads to the development of numerous polyps and tumors throughout the body, with a very high risk of becoming cancerous. While most people with Gardner's syndrome are at a near 100% risk of developing colorectal cancer ( which he has had and beaten), the disease can also cause other growths, like the aggressive tumor Mike is now fighting.
