We are Stepping Stones International, a UK charity that built a primary school in the rural area of Nkhata Bay, Northern Malawi, where we currently host 309 students and 25 staff members. These children show an incredible hunger for learning every single day, yet they face a barrier that makes their education nearly impossible: they simply do not have books. In our classrooms, most textbooks are torn or completely unusable, forcing up to nine children to share a single volume. This lack of resources shatters their concentration and makes it impossible to follow the national curriculum effectively.

The struggle doesn't end when the school bell rings. Without textbooks to take home, our students cannot do their homework or review what they learned in class. This creates a cycle of frustration that limits their potential and leads to lower exam results. We want to change this reality by providing every child with their own learning materials. Having a personal book is a psychological boost that encourages independent study and gives these children the dignity they deserve in their educational journey.

The solution is incredibly simple and costs less than your morning break. For the price of just two coffees, about 2 euros, we can put a brand-new textbook into the hands of one student. Siamo Stepping Stones International, un'ONG britannica che ha costruito una scuola elementare nell'area rurale di Nkhata Bay, nel nord del Malawi, dove oggi accogliamo 309 studenti e 25 membri dello staff. Questi ragazzi mostrano ogni giorno un'incredibile voglia di imparare, ma si scontrano con un ostacolo che rende la loro istruzione quasi impossibile: la totale mancanza di libri. Nelle nostre classi, la maggior parte dei testi è strappata o del tutto inutilizzabile, costringendo fino a nove alunni a condividere un unico volume. Questa carenza di risorse frammenta la loro concentrazione e impedisce di seguire efficacemente il programma scolastico nazionale.

Le difficoltà non finiscono al suono della campanella. Senza manuali da portare a casa, gli studenti non possono svolgere i compiti né ripassare quanto appreso in classe. Si crea così un ciclo di frustrazione che ne limita il potenziale e compromette i risultati d'esame. Vogliamo cambiare questa realtà garantendo a ogni bambino i propri materiali didattici. Possedere un libro personale rappresenta una spinta psicologica fondamentale che incoraggia lo studio indipendente e restituisce agli studenti la dignità che meritano nel loro percorso educativo.

La soluzione è straordinariamente semplice e costa meno di una pausa caffè. Con soli due euro possiamo mettere un libro di testo nuovo di zecca nelle mani di uno studente. Questi volumi rimarranno una risorsa vitale anche per i bambini che seguiranno le loro orme negli anni a venire.
