Help Ruby Gain Her Independence
Our sweet Ruby is 6½ years old — full of life, laughter, and determination. She also happens to be blind.
Ruby lost her sight when she was just 14 months old. She was born with a rare genetic disorder called Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1), which causes tumors to grow along nerves anywhere in the body. For Ruby, those tumors grew behind both of her eyes.
When she was only 2 years old, she bravely went through chemotherapy, but unfortunately, the tumors didn’t respond. Because of NF1, Ruby faces several ongoing medical challenges, yet nothing ever stops her. She approaches every day with strength, independence, and a smile that lights up every room she enters.
Now, Ruby is ready to take her next big step toward independence — learning to use a cane.
Because of her other medical needs, a traditional white cane isn’t the right fit for her right now. Instead, Ruby will be using something called a belt cane — a special mobility tool that gently attaches around her waist and helps her detect obstacles as she walks. It allows her to move safely and confidently while keeping her hands free.
She’ll use her belt cane at school, in therapy, and at home — helping her explore her world more freely and safely.
Unfortunately, the belt cane is expensive, and insurance won’t cover the full cost. I’m working with her doctor to get a letter of medical necessity, but we will still need to pay a portion out of pocket. The canes are available through SafeToddlers.org, but donations can’t be made directly through their site — which is why I’m asking for help here.
If you’re able to contribute, no matter how small, it would mean the world to our family. Every donation helps Ruby gain the freedom, safety, and confidence she deserves.
Thank you for reading Ruby’s story, for your love, prayers, and support, and for helping our amazing girl continue to shine bright.
With love and gratitude,
Ruby’s Family
