A Beloved Dakota Warrior is Falling
Donation protected
Julian Boucher, age 63, a cherished friend and Dakota relative was recently diagnosed with ALS.
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, sometimes referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a rapidly
progressing neurological/nervous system disease. Julian is in the advanced stages of this
disease and is in dire need of support for his daily living expenses and modifications to his home
so that he can remain comfortable as he moves into home hospice care.
Julian, a Sisseton-Wahpeton tribal member who served in the U.S. Navy, carries the Dakota
name, Maza A Didi – Walks on Iron, the name of his great-great-grandfather, who was #39 on
the list to be hung on December 26, 1862 in Mankato, MN, the largest mass execution in the
history of the United States. 38 of our Dakota relatives were hanged that day, and Maza Adidi
was among many of the other 303 Dakota warriors who were sentenced to death and
pardoned.
Julian who also grew up during his youth in Santee, Nebraska is one of the original organizers
and riders of the Dakota 38 Wokiksuye-Memorial Horse Ride which began in 2005 from
Cansayapi (Where They Paint the Trees Red) – Lower Sioux Indian Community. Julian rode on
horseback, hauled horses, drove truck & trailers for others who needed help, and helped plan
lodging, food, logistics and support along the route for many years.
Julian enjoyed horses and rodeos throughout his life. As a horse trainer himself, he helped with
spiritual rides and commemorative events. He was entrusted with the care of the horses of our
Canupa Awanyanka, Chief Arvol Looking Horse. He encouraged and supported the young
people who wanted to honor their ancestors on spiritual rides and generously shared his
knowledge. He stood up and spoke up for what is right especially when it came to the safety
and protection of children. Julian helped his people in many ways. A man that will stop what
he's doing if you reached out for help, just a phone call away.
As a hunter and fisherman, Julian always shares what he has with his family and friends. As his
physical abilities fade, his spirit and heart are strong. Please support Julian during this time, as
he prepares to rest and reflect. Julian’s daily living expenses and home modifications, including
the building of a ramp will help our generous, courageous, loving warrior enjoy his sunset in the
best way possible. We can all gently hold our beloved warrior.
Any contributions will be greatly appreciated by Julian and his family.
Wopida Tanka – with great gratitude.
