A Beautiful Goodbye for Nancy, the Caregiver

Help Honor My Mom, Nancy Kaiser

My beloved mother, Nancy Kaiser, is nearing the very end of her life. She is the most extraordinary, selfless person I have ever known — a true light in this world.

At just 21 years old, armed with a Master’s degree in Social Work, my mom began dedicating her life to helping children escaping abusive and neglectful homes. Over the next fifty years, she expanded her work into countless causes, always opening her heart and our home to anyone in need. Many of my childhood memories are of a house filled with people who needed shelter, care, or simply a family to belong to. She has been a mother figure not only to me but to so many who had no one else.

In 2017, my mom was diagnosed with vascular dementia and Parkinson’s disease. I cared for her at home for five years until her needs became too great for me to manage alone, needing a memory care unit at a nursing home. Now, her dementia has advanced, and she is deteriorating daily. Her doctors have told me her passing could come in days, weeks, or just a few months, and I am advised to prepare for what comes next while cherishing every moment we have left together.

When meeting with the funeral home, we were surprised by the cost of even a simple burial. As a disabled teacher, I simply cannot cover these expenses on my own. Asking for help is so hard for me, but I know I can’t do this alone. In lieu of flowers, I humbly ask you to consider donating — any amount helps — to give my mom the beautiful farewell she deserves.

My mom is my best friend, my inspiration, my rock — truly my other half. We’ve always been our own little “Gilmore Girls,” and imagining life without her is the hardest thing I’ve ever faced. Your kindness and support mean more to me than I can say.

If you’re able, please keep us in your prayers, and if you can, please help us honor this phenomenal woman with the dignified burial she has earned through a lifetime of giving to others.

Thank you for your love, your support, and for being the extended family my mom so often created for others. We love you dearly.

With all my heart,
Emily
