Hi, my name is Adrian, and along with the Shiba Squad, am fundraising for our furry son/ brother, Yoshi, to bring him home. Yoshi's the friendliest and most charismatic, grabbing everyone's attention so he can get those scratches under his head and along his belly wherever he goes. He is still very bright, alert, and happy to see us but it is heartbreaking to see his soul full of life while his body is fighting hard to stay alive.
We want to thank everyone for your generosity and love from sharing and reaching out to donating, we appreciate it all. The amount of support we have seen has been emotionally overwhelming.
4/24 10am update:
TLDR: Yoshi's creatinine levels dropped to 4.6, dehydrated and increased fluids, and appetite stimulants were used and Yoshi ate on his own for the first time since Friday 4/14.
We couldn't be any more thrilled with Yoshi's progress to recovery. Over the weekend and through last night, Yoshi has been in full recovery mode, with his levels consistently dropping with every blood test. Yoshi's creatinine levels dropped to 4.6 and we hope it continues to drop. He's losing weight and dehydrating himself but the doctors are constantly tweaking his fluids. Yoshi's still not eating on his own and he's at a point where he should start to eat so the doctor prescribed an appetite stimulant. If he continues to not eat when discharged they'll have to install an esophagostomy tube to be able to feed and hydrate him. We also got to walk Yoshi on our own today which was really nice, we took him on a 15 min walk around the area and gave him pets when we got back in. You could see that he really just wanted to breathe in the fresh air and feel the sun on his face. We went home satisfied with the results, happy that his creatinine levels haven't plateaued yet and that it looks like it has a high chance to continue to go down.
A couple hours later we got a call around 9:20pm from MedVet and we were terrified as we've never gotten more than 1 call a day. When we picked up, it was an excited voice from Yoshi's main tech saying that Yoshi ate some food. He ate half a bottle of baby food and a couple pieces of chicken. It was a lot more than we could have asked for. We got a text from our friend this morning telling us after we updated her last night on his improved levels but low appetite that she prayed for Yoshi. And happy to hear the very next morning that he ate that night. We appreciate everyone's thoughts and prayers so much.
We'll be getting our financial update when we go into the hospital later today.
4/21 4:45pm update:
Yoshi was in a much happier mood today when we saw him, constantly trying to nudge us with a curled tail for the first four and a half minutes we were there. We got a great update from the doctor that we can finally be happy about. Yoshi's creatinine levels have consistently been dropping. His creatinine went from 10.1 to 9.6 to 8.4. His BUN went from 126 to 105. Blood work is taken every 12 hours but Yoshi is doing so well that after one more test tonight if it looks good, they'll change it to every 24 hours. He still has a long way to go, but all signs are looking good. We hope his levels go back to normal below 1, but if it gets down to 4, he may have chronic kidney disease but it's something that can be managed. We were also able to walk Yoshi today which made us feel amazing as his tail was curled up most of the time. He was VERY happy just to be outside.
A little about Yoshi <3
Yoshi's parents Aoki and Sumo had him and his 3 Shiba siblings on Jan 9, 2016 (7 years old). Yoshi is very close to his sister Jun and brother Meeko, the three of them together are known as the ShibaSquad. Yoshi loves scratches to the point where it gets annoying when he continuously nudges your hand when you stop. He'll welcome anyone he meets to give him scratches, whether he's meeting them on the street, in a restaurant or at the park. Yoshi's a little skiddish when it comes to children, but after he realizes not all of them want to pull his tail and sit on him, he's the most affectionate to them. Yoshi
loves to sleep in weird places, act silly when no one's watching, hang out with the ShibaSquad, and dream of the outdoors. In about a month, Yoshi is supposed to walk his parents down the aisle.
Medical situation
Yoshi is suffering from severe acute kidney failure and has been hospitalized since Sunday 4/16/23 (time of writing 4/20/23). Yoshi's Creatinine levels (primary kidney metric) were getting worse going from 11.1 to 12.4. We're offered 3 options: Dialysis, continued hospitalization pushing fluids and antibiotics, or if we can't afford hospitalization, euthanasia. They said that the best chance we have of Yoshi coming home is through Dialysis but we do not have any %s and probability of Yoshi's survival as they can't pinpoint the cause of the failure, although they have ruled out Leptospirosis and are doubting it's a bacterial infection because his white blood bell count and temperature remain normal. The best guess they have is that he ingested something poisonous.
Yoshi’s Stats at time or writing:
He is still not eating - has a feeding tube for liquid diet
He is not peeing on his own - Catheter
IV for fluids and antibiotics
Creatinine levels 12.4
BUN levels 140
Yoshi's Current Stats 4/24:
