"For years I tried to be perfect, be exactly what everyone wanted me to be. Now I am working on being who I really am, and last year's YOUth Riot really helped me with that. YOUth Riot was like having a second family that was welcoming of who I was at the time."

Third Street Theatre, in partnership with Alberta Playwrights' Network, is presenting the second annual YOUth Riot: a free 3 month playwriting course for Calgary's queer youth. Over the course of the program, these youth will receive playwriting and creation workshops from theatre professionals, helping them craft their unique stories for the stage. The program provides artistic mentorship and ignites creativity, fostering confidence, acceptance and positive self-image. The program will culminate in a showcase presentation of original pieces created by participants.
This year's program experienced a 50% increase in demand from Calgary teens and without your support only 2/3 of the participants will have the chance to showcase their work to an audience of peers and supporters.
Why is a program like YOUth Riot needed? LGBTQ+ youth are more likely than their peers to:
Use and abuse drugs.
Run away from home.
Become homeless.
Commit suicide.
"I've been struggling with depression for a long time and I find it hard to understand and cope with my feelings. It's like I feel nothing, until I'm suddenly overwhelmed by everything I feel. Art has become a bit of an outlet: it helps me deal with me feelings in a healthy and non-destructive manner. This program would help me create ties and be a part of a community."
