He's the first to offer help, but the last to ask.
After a year of wrenching headaches, Jason Woody has been diagnosed with Stage 3 brain cancer and will be undergoing urgent surgery to remove it. Best case: a minimum out-of-pocket cost of $24,000 and 6 weeks of medical leave -- which is a really scary number for this 31-year-old daddy of three and his family. And that's if insurance agrees to pay, which isn't certain.
But we do know that his family needs him, and when others need help from Jason, he is quietly and steadily always there.
He gives money to those who ask for it - even if he needs it, too. He gives rides to indigents and clothes and toys to the immigrants he meets at work. He will spend his day off helping neighbors move or single moms put up Christmas lights. He'll drive all night to Texas to help his brother and a sick baby. He'll drive all morning to Payson to help a family member build a house, and won't accept pay.
He is up at 4 a.m. to provide for his family, working through headaches that he describes as "wanting to die." And at night, even if he can't keep his eyes open, he will play cards with Taylor, and Legos with Landon, and give baby "Chippie" softies until she goes to sleep.
The kids pray daily for their Daddy's head to feel better.
Heidi and Jason pray for help finding a way through this, and offer gratitude for the love and support that they feel.
As scary as this is, it helps to laugh -- hence the name of this cause: Woody and the Walnut - a phrase coined by the MRI nurse.
And one of life's pleasures is watching Jason Woody laugh, really laugh, so hard that his eyes close and his shoulders shake and everyone else around him giggles, too, just watching him.
And we all need more of those laughs, and more of this sweet Daddy and husband, and his selfless, loving heart.
