Howdy friends! The Wonder Warrior Support Squad was created to support my family as we navigate my recent breast cancer diagnosis. My name is Kathryn Molesky, otherwise known as "Kat". I am 40 years old, an evil stepmother to two amazing twins, and a volunteer firefighter in Upstate NY. Last year 2025 was a wild ride and we started 2026 with a detour we never saw coming. My husband and I were just about to expand our family when we heard the news, ductal carcinoma in situ.
While incredibly thankful my breast cancer was non-invasive, stage 0, we were saddened to hear that it is estrogen and progesterone positive; meaning it's fed by my hormones. That made expanding our family a very difficult choice. We chose an aggressive approach to ensure the longevity and preservation of my life while still holding onto hope that I will not just be an evil stepmother someday. In January 2026 I am scheduled for a bilateral mastectomy which will require about a month to fully recover from the surgery with a reconstructive surgery two to four months later.
I wanted to create something that would not only keep me busy during recovery, but inspire us to support each other. To honor those, like me, enduring the realities of this life. It is important to us, a family of first responders, to spread awareness around firefighter cancer that some may not be aware of. While my cancer is hereditary and likely not directly caused by being a volunteer firefighter, it is a reminder to those with a family history of cancer to get checked early. The risks of cancer cells developing more rapidly are higher in those in emergency services, especially due to the high stress and environmental exposures. It is imperative that departments properly decontaminate their PPE, take showers when they get home from an incident, and know their family history. I went for my first mammogram due to my family history and luckily this was caught early.
If you purchase anything from the Wonder Warrior Support Squad store or donate to our GoFundMe, you will directly be affecting my family's chance at a successful recovery and a hopeful future. I thank you in advance for your generosity. The money we raise will pay for copays, medical necessities not covered by insurance. It will help pay for expenses accrued from time off from work and it will invest in our future to remain healthy. If we don't need what is raised, we will donate it back to breast cancer research. In addition, when you choose to wear a Wonder Warrior Support Squad shirt (purchased through Bonfire) you are choosing to honor someone who has battled breast cancer. It proclaims to the world, keeps their names alive, and highlights their resilience, their bravery, and determination to keep moving onward and upward.
As Wonder Warriors we know that FEAR has two meanings. You can face everything and run, or you can face everything and rise. Let us lift, inspire, and ascend unto our purpose.
