Giving Wolfdogs a Second Chance — Rescue & Sanctuary in MO

We’re working toward opening a wolfdog rescue and sanctuary in southern Missouri.

Between us, we’ve raised and worked with wolfdogs for over 15 years, and one thing we’ve learned is that they are some of the most misunderstood animals out there. Many people get wolfdogs because they look cool or think raising one from a puppy will make it just like a dog. Unfortunately, that’s rarely the case.

Wolfdogs aren’t domesticated animals. They’re intelligent, sensitive, and instinct-driven — and far more difficult to manage than most people are prepared for. They need specialized containment, early socialization, and experienced handling. When those needs aren’t met, problems usually start showing up around 1–2 years old.

Once we started looking into how often this happens, we were honestly shocked. A 2023 University of Colorado study found that 90% of wolfdogs adopted by first-time owners are euthanized before age three, even though they can live 12–16 years. That’s over 150,000 wolfdogs euthanized every year in the U.S.

Most don’t make it because shelters know how hard they are to place. These dogs are often terrified, poorly socialized, and not suitable for homes with kids or other animals. As a result, many are euthanized as soon as their required hold time is up.

We couldn’t ignore that.

OUR GOAL

Our goal is to work directly with shelters so when a wolfdog comes in, they call us instead of euthanizing them. We want to create a safe place where abandoned and surrendered wolfdogs can go and live out their lives in an environment that respects their natural needs.

Whenever possible, we’ll also work on socializing and rehabilitating wolfdogs so they can eventually go to knowledgeable, experienced homes. Sanctuaries save lives — but when it’s safe and realistic, a permanent home is always the best outcome.

We are not currently a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Establishing 501(c)(3) status is part of our long-term plan once our land and foundational infrastructure are secured. This fundraiser is helping us take the first steps toward making that goal a reality.

Every dollar raised will go directly toward land, fencing, shelter building, food, and vet care. We’ll be documenting the entire process so supporters can follow the journey and see exactly how their help is making a difference.

Thank you for supporting this mission and helping us give these animals a real second chance.
