I am a Danish adventurer trying to make my first international documentary film – about what I believe is one of humanity’s most universal phenomena today, bravely and heartbreakingly faced by the five most courageous people I know:

A family from Venezuela – mom, dad and three small kids aged 5, 6 and 7.

Together with them, I migrated from South America to North America crossing the notorious Darién Gap jungle, a vast lawless area between Colombia and Panama, to make a documentary film about migration.

We climbed high mountains, crossed raging rivers, slept in the wilderness and walked past dead bodies – migrants who did not make it. We talked, cried, feared for our lives and helped each other through the mud, heat and exhaustion.

“It’s for the future of our kids”, the father of the family said.

“I wish to tell your story in a film”, I responded.

But somewhere along the way, it all became much more than a documentary project. The family went from being characters in the film to becoming my friends – and they still are. Today, I am the honoured godfather of their three lovely kids.

Over the past two years, I have dedicated my life to telling their story – not only because the family is special to me, but because they are also ordinary people just like most of us – which is precisely the message of my film:

Migrants are real people, individuals like you and me, and not just numbers or labels we tend to reduce them to when discussing or having opinions on migration. With this film I wish to put human faces on migration and give migrants a voice.

Many people have supported the project, helping my film crew and me reach the concluding stages of post-production – but we still need the final funding to complete the film and bring this message to the world.

Because, who owns the story of migration? The people who migrate do – and I would be honoured if my film can help them tell it.

Doing so also reminds us of what we may have forgotten: We all descend from migration which is how we humans have populated our planet – with courage, sacrifices, hopes and dreams like the family from Venezuela I met in the jungle.
