If we are lucky, some of us will encounter a Wendy. Someone with a genuine smile, a whip-smart mind, an infectious laugh, and a mischievous twinkle in their eye. They are, in a word, delightful. As a young girl, Wendy was high energy, bright, and popular. She was a dreamer and chased them - running marathons and becoming a Massachusetts State Trooper. There was little she could not do. That was then.

 

This is now. Wendy has Huntington’s disease. Huntington’s is described as a trifecta of Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and ALS. It is progressive, incurable, and fatal. Wendy has managed the initial symptoms of mood disorders and involuntary writhing movements. Body coordination for Wendy is generally a thing of the past. She falls. She also slurs her words. Worse still is her cognitive decline. It is hard, but “imagine the unimaginable” says her husband, Bill. That’s what he is witnessing each day.

 

Wendy and Bill need help. Bill takes her to all her appointments. He shops. He cooks. He cleans. He also needs to work, but he is no longer able to put in the hours to support them. Eventually, Wendy will no longer walk nor talk, and dementia will come. The decline speeds up exponentially now. So do medical bills. Those from extended hospital stays and ambulance rides in the past have mounted. Home health aides are needed now, so are various therapies to keep Wendy’s body, mind, and spirit thriving. There are unpaid bills now and more to come.
