Chemotherapy Not Covered by OHIP

Donation protected
UPDATE:  Thanks to YOU our Goal has been Surpassed!

I am so overwhelmed with the generosity and support I have received from all of you. I can't thank you all enough. At the moment, this fund is in excess of what I would need to cover 6 treatments.

The attention that has been brought to this issue, that affects so many people in our province, has been profound, Not only do I believe that people are seriously looking at the gaps in our system that have affected me and others in my situation, but that treatments may be covered for me and hopefully others going forward.

Regardless, the generous donations you have provided will help to cover the many expenses related to my illness and have sincerely made things easier for us.

I want you to know that any funds that are not needed to cover the treatment expenses, will either be returned to you, or will be used to help others who need the help just as much, if not more than I do, the choice will be yours.

I will be sharing my ongoing experience on my blog and would love it if you would follow the story there. If you leave your email address, you'll be notified when each post is made.

After a rare allergic reaction to her chemotherapy, a Beamsville woman is being shut-down by the province who won’t pay for her secondary treatment options, forcing her to reach very deep into her pocket in order to save her life.
Wendy Andrews is a 44-year old mother of two, living with colon cancer. After a part of her colon was removed she underwent chemotherapy to wipe out cancer cells that were detected in her lymph nodes…that’s when it got complicated. She ended up in the hospital emergency room with an allergic reaction. After another dosage, Wendy reported chest pain and her oncologist suggested that the therapy be stopped.

Wendy’s only option was a drug called Raltitrexed also called Tomudex. It’s offered at Juravinski Cancer Centre – but she found out that OHIP doesn’t cover it.

Dr. William Hryniuk, is the former director of what is now the Juravinski Cancer Centre. He says that money is the reason why OHIP doesn’t cover that specific drug, due to the fact that the drug is used once the cancer gets worse – which hasn’t happened to wendy yet. Dr. Hryniuk believes that wendy’s situation is very rare and that there are steps she can take to get her treatment funded.

In the meantime, Wendy is doing what anyone would do – fight on

Note: My name is Elayne Whitfield and I set this up to raise funds for Wendy & her family who are good friends of mine and my family's.  I am from Barrie, Ontario.  All funds will go to cover expenses for Wendy's cancer treatments. In the event that the treatments end up being covered by any funding body, the funds will be donated to help other individuals in Ontario whose necessary treatment is not covered by OHIP.  All donated funds will go directly to Wendy and her family.
