Update: Our Beloved Cody Has Passed Away
It is with the heaviest hearts that we share the news of our beloved baby boy Cody’s passing at 3:22 AM on October 13th, 2024. We knew it was his time due to several signs, likely due to both old age and rapid liver failure. He took his final breath with his mommy, daddy, and the incredible Dr. Yates by his side—someone we know was meant to be there with us during the hardest moment of our lives. Her kindness and warmth made an unbearable situation just a little bit lighter. She even did the impossible—finding ways to bring a few tender laughs amidst the heartbreak. We feel forever connected to her for the love and care she gave Cody and us.
Cody was our world as we were his. In his last moments, we thanked him for the joy and love he brought us every day. We reminded him of his favorite places, memories, and how mommy and daddy are forever. We told him he will always be our first born, our baby boy, and that we will love him beyond time.
As we navigate this incredibly difficult time, we are kindly asking for your continued support to help cover Cody’s final vet care. Your generosity and kindness have already meant so much to us, and any help in easing this financial burden would be deeply appreciated.
Thank you for your love, support, and compassion during this heartbreaking moment. Cody will forever remain in our hearts.
With love,
Brooke & Eric
Hi, my name is Brooke, and my partner is Eric. For those of you who know us, you know that our dog Cody is not just a pet—he’s our child, our reason for living. He has been at the center of our lives since 2019 when we rescued him as an 8 year old from the high-kill East Valley Animal Shelter in Los Angeles, CA. I found Cody emaciated, shaking, and terrified, standing helplessly behind his cage. I sat with him for five days, refusing to leave until we were able to adopt him and bring him home. It was a moment that changed our lives forever.
Since then, Cody has become our everything. We moved to Newport Beach, and we often say that Cody went from the slums of the streets to the beauty of the coast. He has been our constant companion, traveling with us everywhere, and he has been my emotional support animal through thick and thin. The last five years with Cody have been nothing short of incredible.
Earlier this week, our world turned upside down. Cody suddenly became lethargic, stopped eating, began vomiting, and developed dark urine along with yellowing eyes and gums. We rushed him to VCA West Coast Specialty and Emergency Animal Hospital in Fountain Valley, where he has remained in critical care ever since. His liver levels are dangerously high and are not improving, and the risk of putting him under anesthesia for further tests is too great. We are left waiting, hoping, and praying for his recovery, but the medical bills are mounting at an overwhelming rate.
I have never asked for financial help before, but now I have no choice. The vet bill is currently around $16,000, and it continues to grow as Cody fights for his life. We’ve been putting the charges on a credit card, but this is not something we can handle alone. We are asking for help from our friends, family, and the wonderful animal rescue community that has always inspired us.
Your donation will go directly toward covering Cody’s emergency vet bills, which are increasing by the hour. If the unthinkable happens and Cody doesn’t make it, the funds will also be used for his cremation and a proper memorial. Any leftover funds will help me manage the costs of grief therapy, as the emotional toll is more than I ever imagined.
If you prefer to donate directly since GoFundMe takes a small percentage, I’ve arranged for direct donations to be made to Cody’s account at the VCA West Coast Specialty and Emergency Animal Hospital. You can donate by calling (714) [phone redacted] and requesting to contribute to CODY SCHER OR directly via Venmo @BrookeAshley24
Cody, Eric, and I are incredibly grateful for your support during this heartbreaking time. We love Cody more than words can express, and we are doing everything in our power to give him the best possible chance.
Thank you so much for reading, for donating, and for sharing our story. Every little bit helps.
With deepest gratitude,
Brooke, Eric, and Cody
