Please keep our Dear Friend, Flight Attendant Sylvia Loflin Baird, in your prayers in this New Year of 2021! Sylvia started her flying career with Piedmont 1980 ORF and retired from American.
You may remember Sylvia was a crew member aboard Aircraft 251 Jan 16, 2010 when it suffered a catastrophic fume event / toxic chemical exposure and that ENDED her Flying Career. She was with Captain Dave Hill, whose exposure ultimately led to his death.
Recently Sylvia has spent 2 weeks in the hospital, (one in ICU), having a BRAIN TUMOR removed from the back of her head where she was cut from the top of her head to almost her neck and losing almost all of her lovely hair! This is the FOURTH TUMOR Sylvia has suffered since the fume event, one being liver, pancreas, and kidney. Her Oncologist keeps up with these with MRI's ! The last tumor located in her brain and immediate surgery!
She had fallen recently and hit her head, which prompted an MRI to be done. A BLESSING! Because otherwise, the tumor might not have been discovered before it was too late. Her fall DID NOT cause the tumor but has caused numbness in her leg and foot! She also has suffered a concussion from the fall, causing inflammation and bleeding.
Sylvia is now facing 6 months seeing a concussion specialist in Greensboro to learn to walk again on her left side. The tumor was in a precarious location near major blood vessels, and it was imperative that it be removed as soon as possible. Her surgery was Oct. 21st, and the tumor was removed. Her Doctor believes that the tumor was both fast-growing and benign. The doctor has also sent the biopsy off for a second opinion.
Her Doctor also sent extra tissue from the tumor area, with the request from Sylvia, to the same overseas Pathologist Doctors as a couple of our Unforgettable Deceased Captain’s tissues were sent. This is NOT covered by insurance. She is the first living tissue they have had, as all others have been autopsies of the fume event. Hopefully this can HELP MANY OTHERS around the world with treatments, knowledge, and Saving Lives. This is an expensive undertaking and required extra tissue sample scraping, but our Sylvia was willing to do this to help others!
Sylvia has said many times she never wanted anyone else to go though what she and her crew have endured…that this has ruined many of their lives.
Many of you have contacted asking if their was anything you could do to help her. Sylvia had to get 24/7 help her first 2 weeks home with family and friends helping. Sylvia must be Very Careful and will be in Isolation to avoid exposure to Covid. No driving and being very careful not to fall again and trying to avoid stress! Receiving Hospital and Doctor's Bills does not help Stress for anyone!!
Her Doctors have told her the next six months are VERY CRITICAL for Healing and Learning to Walk. This is very scary for her, her Family, and Friends.
Her therapy is Starting and friends have volunteered to take her which is a Blessing! NOT ALL of Sylvia’s medical bills and other expenses will be covered by insurance. This will be a long, ARDUOUS RECOVERY with LOTS of THERAPIES! This is a large undertaking for her to handle at this time and for anyone.
We are asking for your SUPPORT to BLESS Sylvia through this difficult time. It will help ease this burden and her healing will be much easier. Sylvia does NOT NEED the additional STRESS! She has been through a lot in the last 10 Years since the fume event Emotionally and Financially. Any amount will be appreciated!
