Villagers near the Kijiji site collect water from a muddy inlet at the Lake Victoria shore. They carry heavy 20L yellow containers to their homes.
We're raising money to support the first water-procurement experiment for Kijiji Innovative Sustainable Solutions: to save villagers the journey to the shore; to achieve cleaner water from deeper in the lake, and to provide a water source for Kijiji agriculture and construction phases.
The first low-cost solution is a solar-powered pump system to carry water from the lake to a raised storage tank. Funds will purchase 350m of pipe, a DSS solar-powered pump, construction of a pump-house, and a 5000-liter raised-tank and support structure.
In the long term, we plan to construct and test three different water-procurement solutions for use in rural Tanzania, collecting data on each outcome. Later stages will include innovative filtration solutions, ground-water solutions and rainwater catchment.
