Bismillah.
Hello world, my name is Jolene Sadoun. I'm about to celebrate my 20th birthday, and this year I'm teaming up with all of you to give back to the Houston community. God has been extremely generous to me in my short two decades of life, so the only gift I need for my birthday is the knowledge that I have helped a single human being and increased their quaility of life.
When I started studying at the University of Houston, I found this amazing group of young humanitarions called United Muslim Relief . UMR is a registered 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization. It is one of the fastest growing NGO’s in the United States, with a focus on building humanitarian coalitions to tackle developmental needs. At UMR we believe everyone has a right to live free of poverty in a secure and more equitable world where they are able to realize their potential.
One event which UMR Houston hosts each month, and which has had the greatest effect on my life as an aspiring humanitarian, is Project Downtown. PD brings together the Houston youth for a day to make sandwiches and feed the homeless. During the most recent PD, we made almost 900 sandwiches that we were able to hand out to the homeless on streets of Houston. Unfortunately, the homeless need much more than food and water. Some men, women, and children must contend with the fact that winter is coming and they will be out in the cold for weeks or months with little to no shelter. In the Houston area, the most recent statistics indicate that more than 6,300 people are without a home on any given night .
That's why, before the upcoming Project Downtown, I'm calling on all of you to help me raise $300 to purchase and blankets for the homeless. One blanket, or the fabric needed to make one blanket, costs roughly $3, so a donation of just $15 can be used to help 5 people stay warm. $15 is the same as a movie ticket, or a cheap lunch, or something else we buy to attain some level of material happiness. This year, instead of getting more "stuff" that you don't really need, donate to keep a human being warm and potentially save a life. Hopefully we will be able to get 100 blankets before our January Project Downtown.
Inshallah, if God wills it, we will be able to work together to give this gift to the homeless of houston, I know we can do it! Thank you for taking the time to read this and I hope you will find it in your heart to make a donation. The love of the Houston community is all I need, and if I am able to raise enough by Friday, January 8th, it will be the greatest birthday gift I could ever ask for.
We are all humans sharing this wonderful thing called Earth, and I believe that we can make this a place where everyone gets another chance at life, where kindness is unconditional and generosity is more important than wealth.
Much love and thanks,
Jolene Sadoun

Update No. 2: How does this community continue to take my breath away? In 24 hours we raised over $600, but it's not over yet. Our new goal is $1000 and I know we can do it for the people in need.
Update No. 3: Alrighty everyone, we are so close to our fourth goal of $1500, this is the home stretch. Please keep sharing this fundraiser so we can pass yet another goal!
