Help Walt Receive Life-Saving Surgery for Dravet Syndrome

Walt is a brave and resilient 2-year-old boy battling Dravet syndrome, a rare and severe form of epilepsy that has deeply affected his young life. Walt has already experienced 44 status seizures — some lasting up to 90 minutes — that have required emergency interventions, including intubation, rescue medications, and even life flights. He endures daily myoclonic seizures, and every night his family fears for his life due to the terrifying risk of Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP).

Walt was scheduled for Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) surgery, a procedure that could significantly reduce his seizures, hospital visits, and risk of SUDEP. This surgery offers Walt the chance to have a more stable and healthy life. Families with children who have undergone VNS surgery have reported fewer seizures and shorter hospital stays, offering a glimmer of hope for Walt and his family.

However, despite the support of Walt’s medical team, their insurance company denied the surgery, stating that it is "unproven" and "not medically necessary." Even after his neurosurgeon appealed, the denial was upheld. Now, the family is left with one final appeal option, but they are racing against time. Walt’s health is deteriorating, and without this surgery, his future is uncertain.

Walt’s parents have already spent countless dollars on medical bills and medications to manage his condition. They simply cannot afford the $12,000 out-of-pocket cost for this life-saving surgery.
