West Highland Way Hike for Vizsla Welfare

THE WEST HIGHLAND WAY!
96 MILES ➡️
10,000 FEET ⬆️

Spending some time in Dundee with Jess from Dundee Dog Training allowed us some valuable insight into many of the dogs that are being rehomed through the Vizsla Welfare Charity. In just two weeks, we saw a large number of dogs from 6-months-old to adult dogs who had been helped by Jess but had nowhere to go.

For the first time ever, Vizsla Welfare has recently been forced to temporarily stop accepting the surrender of dogs into their care. They don’t have enough foster homes or enough potential adopters who are suitably experienced and willing to take on dogs that are still very much works-in-progress. Everyone involved with Welfare is a volunteer, they are all struggling to find enough hours in the day to deal with the constant onslaught of dogs, and they are fast running out of money to be able to fund professional behavioural rehab and vet bills for the dogs in their care.

These dogs mostly just need boundaries, and people willing to follow the settling-in rules provided by the charity. But dogs with bite histories are understandably very hard to place and it’s a time-consuming and expensive process. If we can’t help these charities then more and more vizslas are going to be euthanised and it breaks my heart.

We want to do what we can to help, so, on Saturday 6th May, me (storyofatlas) (dundeedogtraining ) and (mindfuldogsdundee) are going to begin a week-long hike to cover the whole length of the West Highland Way. I’ve done a few long runs but I’ve never done 6 days of walking back to back and 96 miles is a BIG challenge so it’s going to be tough. The dogs will be coming too but will have the option to take rest days with our pit crew (aka Sean) when needed. I think it’s going to be a brilliant adventure for us and one that will continue to develop and strengthen our bond with our dogs while helping those who are not so lucky. ❤️

Whatever you can spare for the charity will be hugely received and we all thank you so much for your donations! Wish us luck, we've got the blister plasters at the ready

More information about Hungarian Vizsla Welfare Charity: Founded in 2012, the Hungarian Vizsla Welfare Charity helps Vizslas in need all over the UK. We promote responsible ownership of the breed, support owners whose dogs have health issues, offer free training and welfare advice, and rehome surrendered dogs to very carefully selected suitable new owners. We also support genetic research into breed specific auto-immune health conditions through our close collaboration with the Vizsla Health Trust charity.
