8 students from the Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School (WHEELS) in New York City will visit Havana, Cuba for 7 days on our annual Cuba research trip to learn about the island from the Cuban people themselves. Designed and planned by students in our Critical Theory and Social Justice Club, the trip will focus on hearing from Cubans about the country's history, day-to-day life in Cuba, developing relations with the United States and learning about Afro-Cuban culture. To complement the research students have been doing since November about Cuba, we will visit museums and cultural sites, attend community events, and meet with local historians, community leaders, educators and students.
Last year we were the first public high school from the United States to visit Cuba since the recent easing of travel restrictions. This year we're making our second annual trip, with a new group of students, to further build connections with the island and continue an important ongoing dialogue about race in Latin@ communities.
Our total trip cost - including airfare, lodging, food, museum/educational activities' entrance fees, and ground transportation while in Cuba - is $9,361. Our trip departure date is quickly approaching and there is still a gap between the total cost of the trip and the $4,083 we have fundraised through bake sales, tickets to an upcoming talent show and family contributions. We're about halfway there(!) and we are calling on you - our friends, families and community - to help us reach our GoFundMe fundraising goal of $5,150.
Last year, you helped us make this once in a lifetime experience - at this historic moment - a reality for our students. It is one that will undoubtedly resonate for years to come. We are grateful for your support and look forward to sharing our pictures and experiences with you when we return! Please share this link with your networks to spread this as far and wide as possible.
Sincerely, Daniel and the WHEELS Critical Theory and Social Justice Club
