WHO WE ARE
W.A.Y.S. Cooperativa Social Onlus was founded in 2005 by Lynda Johnson and Paolo Vitali de Bonda. WAYS is an Italian NGO. This basically means that it is a private initiative, running more or less on donations from private persons.
We're striving for the inclusion of adults with intellectual disability, by creating employment through professionally managed ventures.
Yep, that not only sounds interesting and ambitious, it actually is! Ok, just to clarify things...as we want you to read on:
Inclusion means that we want our intellectual disabled members to have an active and visible role in the community. First of all to gain self-esteem. But our work also has an important impact on their families, reducing the anxiety regarding their child's future. And last, but certainly not least, establishing a real working integration has proven to add significantly to change the social prejudice towards intellectually disabled people.
And what about the professionally managed ventures?
Our activities do always, in one way or the other, aim at preserving the environment. Some examples are the collection of lots…and lots...and lots of plastic bottle tops. Also our members organize the collection of out-of-date cell phones and computers, to have them recycled. And another important activity is the sale of yummy, locally grown biological fruit and vegetables.
In our projects we work together with local health authorities and the local community. This year Lynda received an achievement award from Down Syndrome International, recognizing how she has strengthened and enriched the lives of many with an intellectual disability.
SO WHY DO WE CURRENTLY LOOK FOR FUNDS
In the second half of 2019 we would like to take it a big step further with a new, unique venture for Italy. Well, perhaps even for Europe and beyond...but we think being unique in Italy alone is already pretty cool, no? The project name is “WAYS SAYS CHEESE”.
Our idea is to create a small cheese-production laboratory and sales stall, at one of the big market halls in the city of Rome. The stall will be open 6 mornings a week, providing a workplace for 12 of our members producing and selling cheese products.
We will be collaborating with a local biological farm called Casale di Martignano and some other local farms, to get the raw milk. An experienced employee from il Casale di Martignano will be directing the process on a daily basis and also a psychologist will be there to act as tutor and help our members deal with the new challenges they will face.
Our objective is to make “WAYS SAYS CHEESE” economically self-sufficient.
We believe that self-sufficiency will become the starting point for all future social projects that intend to survive and really make a difference, without continuous direct financial input from the public administration.
We will become self-sufficient by selling the cheese: both in the stall to individuals as to (public) entities like schools, hospitals and social cafeterias, collaborating with local public administration to open up these new markets. In this way, our new venture not only offers an amazing opportunity to our members, but also to all social health operators dealing with social projects, to learn and experiment with new methods of inclusion.
That having said...why do we ask for funds if “WAYS SAYS CHEESE”is supposed to become self-sufficient? Good question.
To start off the venture we would we need the equipment for the production of cheese, an industrial refrigerator, a hygienic glass stand, furnishing and decoration of the stall and a refrigerated van to transport the milk and to deliver cheese products to the customers.
To obtain these so-called start-up costs, that we've budgeted at 25.000 euro.... we can really use your help.

For an adult with an intellectual disability having a job means the difference between feeling alive and being taken into consideration, or being kept at home with very few interactions with society and the possibility suffering severe depression.
But finding an adult with an intellectual disability a suitable employment, with a real possibility of being an integrated part of an organization, regular working hours and his or her own responsibilities, isn't easy given the social prejudice.
Your contribution to our project, whatever size it is, immediately changes the actual life of 12 of our members and indirectly will change many lives in the future, contributing to the change in social prejudice towards people with intellectual disabilities.

Ci stiamo sforzando per permettere ad adulti con disabilità intellettiva di trovare lavori grazie ad iniziative professionali con una visione imprenditoriale: un’idea veramente ambiziosa.
OK, giusto per chiarire le nostre idee…ci farebbe piacere che leggessi le seguenti informazioni:
Lavoro, significa dare ai nostri soci con disabilità intellettiva l’opportunità di avere un ruolo attivo e visibile nella comunità. Tutto questo si traduce, come prima cosa, in un incremento dell’autostima e della consapevolezza di poter svolgere qualcosa di importante, oltre a garantire un vero e proprio supporto alle loro famiglie, facendo in modo che ci siano meno preoccupazioni riguardo il futuro dei propri figli. Infine, ma non per ultimo, devono essere poste le basi per un concreto rapporto di lavoro che abbia come obiettivo l’abbattimento dei pregiudizi esistenti nei riguardi delle persone con disabilità intellettive.
Le nostre attività hanno sempre, in un modo o nell’altro, lo scopo di salvaguardare l’ambiente. Un esempio è rappresentato dalla raccolta di tanti, tanti, tanti tappi di bottiglie di plastica. Inoltre i nostri soci organizzano la raccolta di cellulari e computer di vecchia generazione per il riciclo. Un'altra importante attività consiste nella vendita di genuini prodotti biologici e biodinamici (frutta e verdura) a km zero.
Le nostre attività vengono svolte in collaborazione con le autorità locali, all’interno della nostra comunità.
Quest’anno Lynda ha ricevuto un importantissimo riconoscimento da parte dell’Associazione Internazionale Persone Down, che ha riconosciuto il suo importante impegno per rafforzare ed arricchire la vita delle persone con disabilità intellettive.
ALLORA PERCHE’ SIAMO ALLA RICERCA DI FONDI
Nella seconda parte del 2019 vorremmo fare un grande passo avanti con la realizzazione di un nuovo ed innovativo progetto per l’Italia e forse anche per l’Europa ed oltre…ma riteniamo che essere i primi in Italia sia fantastico, non è vero? Il nome del progetto è: WAYS SAYS CHEESE.
La nostra idea è quella di creare un piccolo laboratorio artigianale per la produzione di formaggio con un bancone di vendita in un mercato rionale romano. Il locale sarà aperto sei giorni la settimana offrendo un posto di lavoro a dodici dei nostri soci per la produzione e la vendita dei formaggi. Collaboriamo con una fattoria locale che si chiama Casale di Martignano ed alcune altre aziende che forniscono latte di pecora. Una persona del Casale di Martignano sarà il responsabile della produzione giornaliera ed uno psicologo sarà sempre presente come tutor per aiutare i nostri soci ad affrontare qualunque problematica possa sorgere.
Il nostro obbiettivo è fare in modo che WAYS SAYS CHEESE diventi economicamente autosufficiente. Noi crediamo che essere autosufficienti sia l’unica strada per tutti i futuri progetti sociali che vogliano avere una continuità, senza il continuo aiuto finanziario da parte dell’amministrazione pubblica.
Noi diventeremo autosufficienti vendendo il nostro formaggio sia al banco del mercato che a privati, ristoranti, mense scolastiche, ospedali, collaborando con l’amministrazione pubblica per aprire questi nuovi mercati di vendita. In questa maniera il nostro progetto non solo offre una opportunità ai nostri soci, ma anche a tutti gli operatori che lavorano con progetti sociali per imparare e sperimentare nuovi metodi di inclusione.
Fatta questa premessa, perché chiediamo fondi se WAYS SAYS CHEESE dovrebbe diventare autosufficiente? Buona domanda.
Per iniziare il nostro progetto abbiamo bisogno di acquistare macchinari per la produzione di formaggio, un frigo industriale, un banco di vendita, stigliature e decorazioni per abbellire il locale, una macchina refrigerante per il trasporto del latte e la consegna dei prodotti. Per affrontare questi costi iniziali dello start-up sociale abbiamo stimato un budget di €. 25.000,-….Noi abbiamo veramente bisogno del tuo aiuto.

Per un adulto con una disabilità intellettiva avere un lavoro rappresenta la differenza tra essere una persona autosufficiente, con un ruolo ed un riconosciuto valore personale oppure rimanere chiuso in casa con poca interazione con il resto della comunità. Trovare un lavoro adeguato per una persona con disabilità intellettiva significherebbe una reale possibilità di integrarsi e far parte di una organizzazione con un orario di lavoro e delle proprie responsabilità, cosa non facile dato i pregiudizi esistenti.
Il tuo contributo al nostro progetto, qualsiasi sia l’importo, cambierà la vita di 12 nostri soci e indirettamente cambierà la vita di tanti altri in futuro; non solo, contribuirai anche al cambiamento dei pregiudizi sociali verso le persone con disabilità intellettive.
