On March 13th, Cyclone Pam , one of the world's most powerful storms, devastated the South Pacific islands of Vanuatu.
Extremely hard hit was the small island of Tanna , where I served as a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer. For two years I lived, worked, and communed in the village of Lowkatai and others throughout the island.
We treat each other like family. A local friend even named her child after me, hahaha!

Not only are they incredibly kind and hospitable, but they are among the planets happiest people , in no small part because they live in harmony with the land. Most of the small population live a subsistence lifestyle, relying almost entirely on what the land provides.
Now that land has been devastated, and these wonderful people need our help.

I'm travelling back to Tanna on May 9th, to provide any support possible. My contacts in Vanuatu have told me to bring tents, clothing, kitchen supplies, water filtration bottles, etc. Surviving the storm is only part of the battle. They now face a long struggle of living and rebuilding with scant resources. Many of them are without clean water, or stable shelter. Many families in my village remain huddled into the one school classroom that wasn't destroyed. Personal items we take for granted (toothbrushes!) have been lost or destroyed.
There are many excellent aid organizations such as the Red Cross , and UNICEF that have "boots on the ground" in Vanuatu. I would encourage you to donate to either org to help everyone effected by this storm.
I am asking you for a donation that will allow me to get supplies and cash DIRECTLY into the hands of two specific villages. Your donation will go directly towards meeting whatever needs they may have, including shelter, school supplies, clothing, towels, bedding, utensils, etc. I will spend as much of the money in Vanuatu so as to help the local economy.
Your funds will not cover ANY of my expenses. My trip is completely self-funded. My airfare and housing have been paid as I already planned this trip prior to the cyclone (I was due to arrive the same week as the cyclone and postponed until May).
Water filtration bottle: <$50
Kitchen supplies: >$50
Tent for 4: <$100
Clothing for 4: <$100
Building materials: >$500-1000
I'm flying to Tanna on May 9th. I truly appreciate any assistance you can give! Thanks so much!
