Val ( Astor ) M Val - Hackett

Hello family, friends, loved ones & those whom we have not yet a chance to meet,

Our father, Val, was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2020. When discovered, it had already spread to his brain. After undergoing brain surgery in March of that year, he recovered at home during the pandemic under the care of our mother, Nica - his loving and doting wife. Thankfully, with the help of a great care team and family support, he underwent treatments that rendered the cancer temporarily inactive.

We were blessed with time to celebrate holidays, birthdays, births of new grandchildren and many

everyday joys and disappointments together since his diagnosis. With ongoing infusions and specialized medications for his mutation of cancer, things felt very promising.

Around the holidays of 2022, his cancer became active again in the brain. In February of 2023, things progressed very quickly in just a few days. The diagnosis is that the cancer has moved into his brain, spinal cord and meninges. The only effective treatment option left was 10 sessions of proton therapy. After completing these sessions Val has returned home under the continued care and monitoring of Nica.

Despite an encouraging start to this battle, our foe has returned more fervently than before. With diminished strength and a desire to live comfortably at home unaided by machines, we are working to make the best choices for Val during this chapter.
