From my sister in law who started this for us: (I am doing the updates) Undersheriff Chad Murphy with the Rice County Sheriff’s Office was shot 4 times in the line of duty on April 29, 2019, in Sterling, Kansas. He was flown to Wichita, Ks. Chad is getting better every day, however two of the injuries have caused very limited mobility to both of his arms and he will have to spend an extended amount of time in rehab. With his wife and family by his side, we know he will make a full recovery! Until then, we all know how life continues on, bills are still due and food still has to be put on the table. Chad is my brother-in-law and we want to help with anything we can so that Chad can focus on getting better! So many people want to help, so we set up this fundraiser with Chad’s permission. Your thoughts and prayers are appreciated and are helping all of us through this tragic situation.

Today was Chad's appointment with the specialist. He's a Plastic/Orthopedic Surgeon. He is the doc that is taking care of the right arm with nerve damage. Chad has good strength in his arm, but only 30% use right now. Doc isn't satisfied with the progress of his deltoid muscle, the muscle that the neck shot exited through. He is ordering another nerve study.... We understand why, but Chad knows how painful it was the last time, so not looking forward to that! Doc says that if this muscle isn't working, we are going to have to look at other options. Surgical options. We have a certain window of opportunity to do this or risk no more improvement. The nerve study will be conducted in 2 weeks and then a follow up with Doc in 3 weeks. If surgery has to happen, after surgery we will be back to square one with no movement in the right arm. The therapy will start over, but the arm/nerve/muscle should train faster than before.

So we ask for continuing prayers and positive thoughts, as this is not the greatest news, but we are STILL IN THE GAME!

Thank you all so much for following along with us and all the support!!!
Love to you all!

Well, this week has been exhausting. I've been promising an update....We've had to be in Wichita since Monday for therapy and a specialist appt. We are so tired and ready to be home. This update is going to be pretty raw....
Sometimes our emotions, hopes, energy and nerves are just spent. For being shot four times, Chad is doing wonderful! He is up and out and smiling and happy! His wounds have healed on the outside extremely well. Some spots you have to really look to see the scar. The internal scaring and healing are a different story. Now reality:

The shot from his hip through his abdomen has significant internal tunnel scaring. Not painful, but tight. We rub that tunnel to try to loosen it a bit and to keep the blood from hardening in there. (like a scab) This has affected his muscles and his core strength. This makes it impossible for him to sit in some chairs, couches, etc. or lay in a bed because he doesn't have the strength to pull himself up.

The left shoulder/clavicle shot is motion painful and by watching him, you would think it was good to go. The specialist told us yesterday that it is not healing the way he wants it to and probably never will. The collar bone shaft bones that had to fuse together are not dense. They are translucent. We will have another visit in 6 weeks. Prayers that it's better news!!

Now for the neck shot...
The scar tunnel for this one is deep internal. We cannot rub this one because it's deep in the neck right by the coratid artery. This scar is now pulling his deltoid muscle in. There is a definite crater in his back from this. This scar tunnel could cause so many secondary problems with his head, neck and shoulders.

There is still constant pain and nerve pain. The nerve pain is the worst because pain killers don't really help miscommunicated signals from the brain. Gabapentin is his nerve pill that he will be on for the rest of his life. The nerves even hurt from the tiny hairs on his arm. He also now has a tendon that flips at the top of his arm. I've been taught how to rub that and inflame it so that the brain can send signals to calm it down and he can get a few hours of relief before I do it again.

They are still saying 8 months to 1 year to get back to work, which he desperately wants to do.

Sorry this is so long winded, but I've had people ask how we are and to the general public, we are great and everything is going as we had planned, but in reality, we don't know one day to the next what to expect. It's hard, very hard! On top of all the emotions and exhaustion, we miss being home and still having a teenager at home and that's stressful.

I will update again next week after our visit with the nerve specialist. We would definitely welcome ALL prayers for some good news from him!!

Thank you all for your continued prayers! Sometimes those are the only thing we cling to.
Love to you all!

So....I can't seem to sleep, so decided to do an update tonight. 2 weeks ago we had an appt with the spine specialist just to follow up. The assistant came in to check Chad's blood pressure and it was 160/120.... that's not good! We were told to make an appointment with our primary care physician. We did, but also had PT & OT scheduled for the following morning. We show up and they didn't want to touch him for fear of him stroking out. We got into our PCP that afternoon and he was put on a water pill. 4 days into that, his BP was still high running an average of 140/100....He was then put on another low dose BP med. While at that appt, they asked how I was doing.....Well, I thought I was fine! Doc thought different. Scheduled a follow up for Chad this past Monday and wanted to see me too.

Mondays appointment went well for Chad! BP was awesome!! Meds are aworking He got the okay to resume therapy!

I on the other hand was put on meds for Generalized Anxiety. Anxiety is nothing new to me, but I guess it's pretty high right now. I also had some general lab work done, and scheduled my mammogram. Would love prayer for good news on those!!

During our week off of therapy, we went to the production of Mama Mia (LOVED IT) with our Jester Award winning son, Josh on lights and we tried to just enjoy being home for 9 days straight. Here are some pics of some enjoyable moments

Love and prayers to you all

It's been a crazy emotional ride the last few weeks. But, wanted to have all the info before I updated. So here it goes:
June 5: Chad had a nerve study (EMG) which was very painful! He said it was the most pain he'd experienced since being shot.

June 12: We got the results of that study....GUT PUNCH! Doc said his nerve was destroyed. This nerve would not allow the muscles to move. We were told that he will not get any more improvement. We were devastated to say the least. There were lots of tears! We were then sent to another doctor for his opinion.

That appt was today! We go in, he checks range of motion, asks a few questions on progress and then very nonchalantly says "oh yeah, you'll recover" WHAT??? OMG! We were/are in shock!

Y'all can't even fathom the devastation we felt for a couple of weeks now. From: you'll not ever go back to being the cop you once were.
To: oh yeah, you'll recover...

Doc said it was way too soon to say anything about not getting better. The nerves take a loooong time to regenerate and he's saying like 5-6 months before even looking at any type of surgery.

We needed this news so badly! I think we are still in the clouds!! lol Like... What just happened here???

I know I didn't go into a lot of detail, but just wanted you all to know!! Any questions....ask away! We are in our way into PT & OT and then home!

Thank you all so much for those prayers! They are definitely working! Our God is an awesome one for sure!
