I want to thank you for all of your support. Madelin, who serves as the Assistant to the U.S. GRADE Network, confirmed that in terms of our presentation, they would be happy to have us “provide a 5-minute Powerpoint presentation to the GRADE faculty and then have questions and feedback for an additional 15 minutes (20 minutes total).” She advised us as well that they cannot hold our spaces in the conference but that they do not expect to sell out before the end of the month. Your help is urgently needed. Receiving this confirmation of our presentation also confirms the value of this opportunity to our academic careers and to our systematic review in progress.
My team comprised of 3 undergraduate students, including myself, are undertaking a systematic review continuing from Dr. Irwin Sandler’s work on an “Overview of Meta-Analyses of the Prevention of Mental Health, Substance Use and Conduct Problems” (2014). Our question that we are exploring is: Does utilization of universal, selective, or indicated evidence-based preventative interventions, in those aged birth to 18, reduce the occurence of mental health, substance use, and/or conduct problems?
I am reaching out to every department possible to assist with fees to attend this conference knowing the benefit that this will have to be able to add to my CV and to be able to be a part of this intimate setting. Over the 16+ hours of intensive hands-on training with 6 internationally renowned faculty with extensive teaching experience as facilitators, there are a total of 44 participants allowing us to work closely with the facilitators in the small group settings where we are encouraged to bring our work. It would be an honor to be a part of these participants and to be able to present at a conference of this level. I hope that you will partner with me to help me take a part in this incredible opportunity.
The goal of presenting at this conference is to help us in our preparation to submit a strong systematic review abstract to the Society of Prevention Research in October 2020 followed by a well-organized systematic review manuscript to the Prevention Science Journal between October 2020 and January 2021 for presentation of this paper at the Society of Prevention Research Conference in May 2021. Going to this conference would also allow us to instruct my student that is not able to join us about the evidence-based assessment skills we gained and that will be necessary for the completion of our systematic review.
To date, my team and I have taken 8 online modules to enhance our learning. We have also submitted our review to the pilot systematic review service with the library to be matched with a librarian for assistance with our search. We have also compiled a list of 12 subject matter experts to email about joining our team to overcome the objection of the journal editor: Who is the subject matter expert? We are also participating in a “Grantathon” as a team to try to win one of the cash prizes to help raise funds and our skillset.
Attached you will find my principal investigator’s letter of support for this independent project that I am undertaking as well as below you will find a list of the expenses for this conference:
$1598 for conference registration
$116 for an AirBnB half a mile away from the conference hotel, Pointe Hilton Squaw Peak Resort.
$65 for meals not covered by the conference with the AEP reimbursement guidelines of $5 for breakfast, $7 for lunch and $12 for dinner
$70 for gas in hybrid vehicle to and from Phoenix, Arizona.
The total assistance that I will need is $1,849. Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated and I will let you know if I secure any funding from another department.
This opportunity is truly remarkable at this point in my academic career and I would love the honor to represent UCSD at this conference.
Thank you for your time in considering this request. They advised us that they cannot hold our spaces in the conference, but that they do not expect to sell out before the end of the month. Your help is urgently needed.
