Hi, my name is Enna Uwaifo, and I am an entrepreneur based in London. I am developing my business Uninhibited Development Solutions, whilst in a precarious housing situation due to resisting cultural abuse.
“SAY NO TO CULTURAL ABUSE
SAY YES TO FULL CITIZENSHIP“
Introduction
Naming the state of emergency in the British Nigerian community
It is not okay to beat to your children because of culture.
You are violating your child’s right to not experience serious physical harm under Section 5 of the Domestic Violence, Crime and Victims Act 2004, based on ethnicity and culture
It is not okay to believe that people from your culture should be paid less than white professionals to deliver the same services as you believe you are entitled to “cultural prices”.
You are enforcing the standard that people from your culture should be socially punished, exploited more and paid less for upholding their right to earn at the same rate as their white counterparts, based on race and culture.
About the fundraiser:
This Christmas period, at Uninhibited Development Solutions, we are raising £20,000 as a founder’s stipend to move out of the Women’s refuge and sublet elsewhere in London.
This is also the launch of more full-fleged campaign to advocate for equal application of Section 5 of the Domestic Violence, Crime and Victims Act 2004 children of all ethnicities.
Domestic abuse is still very common in the UK. The police recieves a domestic violence call every 30 seconds. One woman in the UK is killed by a partner every 5 days (1). The scaling of refuges is a key to preventing the worst-case scenario for women. There is also anecdotally a reported rise in reports to social services for Nigerians parents.
The fundraiser serves the purpose of raising awareness of the issue of the increases of Nigerian children being taken into social services due to Nigerian parents not understanding nor following British child abuse laws.
In the Nigerian culture, what is considered “child abuse” in Britain, is instead considered “Discipline”. There is an entire culture that protects child abuse and domestic abuse as “culture” rather than “abuse”.
This failure to apply Section 5 of the Domestic Violence, Crime and Victims Act 2004 cross-culturally”.
(1) an inescapable environment for young persons is created, as the culture does not recognise clear cases of child mistreatment as such. “Beatings” still considered “cultural parenting” not abusive parenting.
(2) increases the risk of parental imprisonment once it is reported to the police and social services as children become aware of their rights and recognise the mistreatment.
(3) leads to long-term physical, and mental health impacts on families and children.
(4) the "rights of parents and community to abuse " is protected. This creates a self-imposed second-class citizenship where Nigerian persons are justified to not have the same political, social and economic rights as others and it is justified as “culture”.
I seek to develop the foundation arm of Uninhibited Development Solution Ltd to create bursary schemes that addresses the unique challenges of British Nigerian, and broadly African young professionals, due to cultural disparities in the application of Section 5 of the Domestic Violence, Crime and Victims Act 2004. This is to contribute to the movement to end child abuse across Britain through culturally informed practice
