Hi all!
My name is Amy Bruce and I am an emerging artist based on the Central Coast and in Sydney. I am shaving my head as a way of supporting someone very important to me, Jody Robinson, who has recently discovered that she has stage 2 breast cancer which has spread to her bones. This amazing woman is someone who has mentored, supported, encouraged and inspired the career path I have chosen to take as an artist. I would like to inturn support her and help her with the skills I now have come to know as a practicing artist.
The work that I generally do in my practice is across many mediums and in alot of cases is quite experimental. So I have decided to make a film of me getting my head shaved as a performance piece and using the hair I collect from this process to create a series of textile/domestic arts work which will be donated along with the money I hope to raise with this gofundme account to the exibition "Two Words One Finger" which has been organised to raise funds for Jody during her fight against this fucked disease called cancer.
After hearing this devastating news I was so delighted to know that I could support her by donating an artwork to the event her amazing son Quinn Squires, fellow artist, has organised. The incredible amount of support this event has already recieved has been so helpful in giving both Quinn and Jody something to not only look forward to but to feel proud of. They have brought so many people together with something this family love and are so passionate about, the arts. Something which Jody has always taught me to believe in as powerful tool to make dreams a reality, to educate, to bring about change, and to inspire others.
To know more information about this event and updates on Jody's battle go to their facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/Two-Words-One-Finger-The-Exhibition-574327849393507/
After giving it alot of thought and having discussions with peers/friends I came up with this idea of using a conventional way of fundraising for cancer, like shaving my head, and then making it into a piece of artwork much like the whole idea of the exhibition itself. The fact that I can't be present at the event made me that more determined to do something much more thoughtful for Jody then just including something I had already made, as she deserves nothing less. She has inspired so many people with her incredible skills as a passionate art eductor and mentor and has helped me to achieve all I could've dreamed of when I was in highschool as her student.
I have started this fundraiser for Jody and have set a target of $1,000 to hopefully be met within the next month before the exhibition is on and before I go overseas. Getting involved in this and supporting my efforts to help Jody would mean so much to me and everyone that cares for her. Every dollar counts to the cause and would be appreciated so so much!!!! So if you can even give $1 I would be forever thankful.
Over the next few days I will include a video preview of the work/performance on this page to show you a sneak peek of what you are supporting when donating to this fundraiser.
And as her son Quinn said "we raise one almighty finger....and defiantly state, 'Fuck Cancer'"
Lets do this!!!
