Hi everyone,
We formed the Twende Education Foundation to support local education and living standards in Tanzania and other African countries. 7 of us Ivey students (Aidan, Adam, Julianna, Kosta, Sai, Nathan, and Hin) are currently in Mwanza, Tanzania, as a part of the Africa Service Learning opportunity through Ivey Business School. We are teaching a business course at St. Augustine University of Tanzania (SAUT). We have been here for 10 days, and have been lucky enough to meet some amazing people, teach some great students, and immerse ourselves in a completely different culture than what we know. However, we have also come to understand that many people here lack adequate living conditions or access to basic educational opportunities. As a result, we have set a fundraising goal to support the following items:
1. Our main goal is to set up an annual, formalized scholarship fund, which would support 4 students from the Bulemeji Secondary School to pursue a 2 Year Diploma at SAUT. Bulemeji is a large school located in a very poor neighbourhood, and many of these students are unable to attend post-secondary school without monetary support. The school has also asked us to purchase a photocopier and school supplies for them, which would go a long way to assist with learning.
2. Our second goal is to support a local Orphanage, which has asked us to bring food / supplies for both living and learning, including rice, clothes, chairs, notebooks, and more.
3. Our final goal relates to basketball, as we have made a very deep, personal connection with the basketball team. If we have enough money after achieving our first two goals, we aim to improve the infrastructure surrounding sports, specifically providing equipment and installing lights for the basketball court on campus.
We are very committed to achieving these goals, and have already begun organizing and purchasing materials. We are asking for your help to support us in this initiative to improve education, living, and sport, in Tanzania. Even a little bit of money ($5 or $10) goes an incredibly long way. Thank you so much, everybody.
Aidan, Adam, Julianna, Kosta, Sai, Nathan, and Hin.
