Keeping Turkey Wild - Turkey Mtn Trail Renovation

Trails are the primary way most people experience River Parks’ Turkey Mountain Wilderness, a Tulsa treasure rising above the Arkansas River in the heart of the city.  With over 600 acres of hills and valleys, forests, and meadows, the mountain draws people by the tens of thousands to hike, bike, and ramble its winding trails year-round.  Fall of 2021 marks the implementation of an exciting first phase of trail improvements in alignment with the recently completed Turkey Mountain Master Plan.  Echoing broad community input to “keep Turkey wild,” the Master Plan’s thoughtful conservation principles are embedded in upcoming enhancements to the park’s extensive natural-surface trails network. With a 43% increase in visitors last year, the time is right to launch trail improvements to reinvigorate the core Turkey Mountain experience and assure the park’s viability for generations to come.  To that end, River Parks Authority has engaged Progressive Trail Design, a renowned design firm from northwest Arkansas, to create a multiuse trail network based on the ideas suggested by the Master Plan.  The park’s unique terrain and geographic features will inform trail modifications, enriching the user experience and diversifying the types and difficulty of trails to benefit a broad range of ages and fitness levels.  Making these timely investments in the Wilderness in a sustainable, environmentally-conscious manner adheres to the Master Plan’s four goals:

•  Enhance Trails     •  Restore Nature     •  Maximize Access     •  Integrate Programming.

Plans call for wide, multiuse trails throughout the park, serving a wide range of user groups.  Bike-specific nodes will capitalize on the steepest terrain, offering adventures to delight beginner to expert level riders.  Other trails will emphasize family-friendly features to build skills for young riders or offer a relaxing woodland walk.  To aid the enjoyment of time spent at Turkey Mountain, new wayfinding signage will be sited to harmoniously blend with the surroundings.

As a destination attraction, the Wilderness differentiates Tulsa, providing a competitive advantage in its economic development and talent recruitment initiatives.   Very simply, Turkey Mountain offers unparalleled potential for world-class, sustainable recreation.  Whether you start each day running the trails of the mountain or mark the weekend with a family hike, the diversity in user groups – from hikers and bikers to families and bird watchers – testifies to the abundant experiences the Wilderness provides for all.  Join us and be a part of undertaking the first steps of the Turkey Mountain Master Plan and trek towards preserving and enhancing the trails of this community treasure!
