Support Turfgrass Research by Dr. Travis Shaddox

Donation protected
My name is Dr. Travis Shaddox, and I am a soil scientist specializing in turfgrass nutrition, soil fertility, and sustainable landscape management. For over two decades, my work has focused on improving the way we manage turf systems—from home lawns to golf courses—through evidence-based science. I’ve dedicated my career to answering practical questions such as how to grow healthy grass with fewer resources, how soils directly impact turf performance, and how science can cut through marketing claims that often mislead turf managers and homeowners.

As both a researcher and educator, I’ve published peer-reviewed articles, guided golf course superintendents, lawn care operators, sod producers, sport turf managers, home owners, and created educational content through my channel Turfgrass Epistemology—where I share science-based insights and help people understand how we know what we know in turfgrass science.

I am raising funds to support independent turfgrass research and science communication. Why not write a grant? Great question! Over the years I have submitted numerous grants proposals to a variety of associations and companies with no success. Apparently, nutrient and soil test research is not a priority for funding agencies. Unfortunately, the lack of research in this area has resulted in turf managers relying on soil tests with little (or in most cases) no supporting evidence.

Your support will help:
  • Conduct independent experiments that answer real-world turf management questions that have a direct impact on you.
  • Expand public access to turfgrass science through educational videos, podcasts, and outreach.
  • Challenge misinformation in the turfgrass industry by providing transparent, peer-reviewed evidence.
  • Build best management practices by publishing cutting-edge research.

By contributing, you’re not just supporting research—you’re helping ensure that turfgrass management is guided by science.

Current Research Projects:
  • Influence of Potassium Source and Rate on Centipedegrass (data collection)
  • Agronomic and Economic Impact of Soil Test Philosophies for Turfgrass (Tall Fescue, Kentucky Bluegrass, St. Augustinegrass; data collection)
  • Influence of Nitrogen Sources on Turfgrass Phytotoxicity (Latitude 36; manuscript preparation)
  • Correlation and Calibration of Mehlich-3 Sulfur for Kentucky Bluegrass (accepted for publication)

Current Project Expenses:
Research and communication is expensive. Expenses include ovens, reflectometry meters, probes, fertilizers, fuel, computers, software, travel, publishing fees, and labor just to name a few. However, with some creative thinking and collaboration, expenses can be minimized. As of 2025, I am conducting research in 3 states with 2 additional states scheduled to begin collaboration in 2026. I estimate the annual expenses to be ~$20,000. This total includes $10,000 of donated labor. Your contribution will help fund the remaining $10,000 cost.
