Brain Cancer Treatment for Shannon Hausey
Shannon Hausey is a military veteran, executive chef, father, grandfather, husband, and D&D enthusiast. Shannon was active in the Empire of Medieval Pursuits (EMP) and Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA), both organizations that perform realistic medieval combat (check it out, it’s pretty brutal). Before his diagnosis, Shannon dedicated a lot of time to volunteering at domestic violence shelters after being deeply moved when a close friend was shot and killed by her boyfriend. And more often than not… Shanon is a wise ass.
Shannon also has, amongst other conditions…Terminal Brain Cancer.
We came to know of Shannon from a D&D Facebook group where Shannon put out a call to play in as many D&D games with as many people as possible before he dies. We and many others answered the call. We had the privilege of being his first stop and hosting Shannon at my house in Savannah. We all had a blast playing D&D into the night. Shannon went on to play with several other D&D groups around the South-east and, to this day, is a regular remote player with us.
Here are the details:
Shannon was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer on Sept 16th, 2021 (about a year ago). On Nov 12th, 2021, they found that It has spread to his stomach and lungs. Shannon desperately needs help acquiring his monthly medication, which costs about $1600 for a one-month supply. He is often faced with deciding between getting meds vs. getting food, and as a result, he’s lost quite a bit of weight. Recently given news that it might be another 3 to 6 months before things might begin to take a turn for the worse.
While a terminal condition presents you with more or less a hopeless outcome, there is a little silver lining here. New drugs that have come available could move the timeline out. What used to be a 2 year maximum expectancy… (of which we’re about 1 year in now)… it’s possible with the right meds to get another possibly 5 years out of an end-of-life with this diagnosis.
So… Let’s see what we can do to
1) Not allow Shannon to have to choose between food and meds.
2) Let’s help him reduce the suffering. He is currently putting on a fearless face against trying to stay strong for those around him.
3) More D&D. Let’s get him back in the game. Playing with this Savannah Crew. Playing in LA and Wisconsin. Playing remote when he’s too sick to travel. The thing he wants to spend what little time is left doing before he passes on to the next realm. Let’s grant him his dying wish.
Shannon has a couple of scheduled surgeries and was hospitalized this week from another Bacterial infection in his spinal fluid. The cherry on top. Let’s get him as right as we can, for as long as we can, and if the stars align… let's have him back, in person, joining in our sessions around the country.
Let’s Get Shannon Back in the Game!
