Who am I?
Many of you know me. And love me. (Thank you for your love, I love you too!)
Some of you may not know me. I am the daughter of Heddy Morales, George Williams, and Andy Ramos-Rivera, humble public servants who have devoted their life’s work to nurturing children and adults who are differently abled or suffering from severe mental illness and drug/ alcohol addiction. I am a community based educator and medicine worker who stands on the shoulders of Ella Baker and Tituba, Gloria Anzaldua and Audre Lorde. I teach political and wellness education through a young women’s leadership program I founded two years ago, T.U.F.F (Turn Up for Freedom) Girls. Here, learning is based on the idea that healing is resistance, that the personal is the political, and that discovering individual power is in service of building people power.
What am I raising money for?
I am raising money so that I can pay for yoga teacher training, a dream that I have had for the past 5 years. Yoga has been an integral part of my personal journey and its principles have also shaped how I offer medicine in movement spaces more broadly.
The total cost of program at Studio 34 is $2400. Despite the small income I receive from adjuncting and T.U.F.F. Girls, I have currently saved up $1000. With the upcoming deadline (July 22), I need the help from my beloved community to raise the rest of the funds. I'm asking for $1500 as opposed to $1400 since GoFund will collect their coins on each donation. Any additional funds will go towards food and rent since I am currently out of work until the school year begins.
What will I do with the training?
I chose the Studio 34 Teacher Training Program
because it has an emphasis on teaching yoga through a trauma-informed approach as well as teaching yoga philosophy and yoga for all bodies. The program would allow me to be in a much more qualified position to offer medicine to not only the participants and families of T.U.F.F. Girls, but also be able to take bring yoga as form of healing justice, to movement space, social justice organizations/work, youth detention centers, women’s shelters, prisons, and be able to reach our differently abled, and queer/GNC/trans folk.in those spaces.
Why this means so much to me?
This is not just a goal, this is a dream. I believe my purpose is tied to my capacity to bring together the spiritual and political, and I hope to only strengthen that connection through deep introspection throughout my training process. Whenever I have offered one-one-one yoga sessions with folks, particularly folks in movement space, they have found it to be a powerful experience that helped them to get back into their breath, body, and power. Simply put, it’s soul work. It would mean so much if you would help me to better help our community heal themselves and each other.
Give where and how you can! Here are some incentives for certain amounts. They are each named after medicine workers of the Black Radical Tradition.
