Imagine it is two days before Christmas and you receive unexpected news . . . you have cancer. That is exactly what happened to Tom Wallis just two months ago.
Over the past eight weeks Tom has discovered he is fighting for his life. Renal Cell Carcinoma has invaded his kidney, and spread throughout his bones. A rod was inserted into his leg to prevent breakage, but unfortunately, the leg broke anyway.
Tom's beloved students at Hazelwood West Middle School returned from the holiday break to learn that Tom would not be returning to school in the near future. Instead, he has spent two months in and out of hospitals, rehab facilities and for a short time, his home. His students send him notes which most definately cheer him up.
Tom, his wife Sheri, their kids and grandaughter are now struggling with the reality of cancer, and trying to make ends meet at the same time.
Needless to say, Tom's income has been lost and the medical bills have been adding a burden like no other.
As a friend and co-worker of Sheri's, I watch her embrace hope, make plans for the future and take care of her family with grace and dignity as the family yearns for answers. How did this happen? Where did it come from? What can we do to beat this disease?
I would greatly appreciate any help you can provide. No amount is too small to give to this family.
Thank you in advance.
