Kaiser Security Officer fired for starting CPR

Donation protected
On 1/10/2019 I  was working for Securitas Security at Kaiser Antioch CA Hospital. At about 09; 00 am I was in the lobby of the Medical Offices, a person came in visibly
upset stating there was a traffic accident in the parking lot. I immediately responded to the area and found an elderly male 86 in the driver seat of a white Toyota Highlander with the engine running. He was slumped back and appeared to be unresponsive with very shallow respiration. I attempted to enter the vehicle and found all the doors locked with the windows up. I told another security officer to request for a Medical Team to respond along with a 911.
Since this patient seemed to be in serious trouble and not responding, security had retrieved a fire extinguisher to break a window to gain excess to the patient. The passenger rear window was broken, and an entry was made. An AED arrived and was placed on the patient’s chest it indicated no shock advised and CPR was started at 09:06. The E/D team arrived, CPR was started.
Ventilation's were given along with chest compression. Within a minute or so the Fire Department arrived along with AMR. The Fire department extracted the patient and was transferred to  Emergency Department. Unfortunately, the patient did not survive. A few days later I was fired from Securitas. The reason was I was not directing traffic. Security was not to be doing patient care. I might add that these actions are covered under the good Samaritan act. I was shocked. How heartless can this company be? I had worked for them for over 7 years without incident. I am a past BLS CPR American Heart instructor for over 20 years I also was affiliated with the Red Cross CPR instructor as well as the National safety council First Aid and CPR instructor. I hold a valid E.M.T. (since 1978) certification in California and my past career was with ambulance companies in California as well as serving as director of operation with American Medical Response in San Francisco as well as a Paramedic coordinator for Bowers Ambulance in 1999 in Long Beach CA..
1/25 was my termination from Securitas and Kaiser. Then in Feb my wife was taken to the hospital with COPD and was admitted to Feb. 8th in CMU.  On the day she was discharged We were told that Securitas had canceled all my medical insurance the day after being fired. Currently, my wife is receiving SSI, I now have a job offer, but there will probably be a 90 day waiting for health care, and that will not take care of the recent hospital stay for my wife, I'm thinking that bill well I'm looking in access of $50,0000. or $60,000.00  . I received a statement for Cobra at a total of $1800.00 a month.  Along with our mortgage and other bills I don't know what we will do. All of this for trying to save a man's life. I'm just asking for a little help. My wife has COPD and I'm a diabetic on blood thinners. Now we are without medical insurance. If you can help it would be appreciated. The reason I'm posting this is of course our Bills, but this is also, I feel this is more of a moral issue.  How a security company and even their contractor which is Kaiser Hospitals have no regard for someone trying to save a life and is more concerned about company policy than human life. I just wanted to get the word out on what they have done & what they really stand for. They really don't care about the front-line security officers that work the long hours with no real support.    We will try to keep everyone posted. Whatever is raised will be used for our Medical  & Insurance Bills.

Just an update. We would like to thank all those who help us thru this difficult time. This past year has been difficult.  Colleen's medical issues caused her to be hospitalized for a few months and then a rehab. Our medical bills that have been paid at Kaiser were about 1.4 million by Medicare. With your assistance, I was able to maintain our Kaiser insurance. This was an issue that was unforeseen by us and started in Feb. of 2020. She was home by July and is doing alright now. Thank you all, God keep you all safe my friends.   Tim
