For over a decade now, my mom has struggled with Parkinson’s Disease. Parkinson's is a progressive disorder that affects the nervous system and the parts of the body controlled by nerves. It affects nearly every part of life, including speaking, moving, eating, walking, and sleeping. With Parkinson's, walking puts you at about a 38% chance of falling. In the past year or so, my mom has suffered several falls that have landed her in the hospital.
I started this GoFundMe to raise $7,000 to purchase an exercise therapy bike that is made for patients with movement disorders. Because exercise is difficult or nearly impossible for some patients with PD, "forced exercise" can allow that patient to still get the benefits of exercise. Studies show that forced exercise can ease the symptoms of Parkinson's and actually slow down the progression of the disease. More specifically, this bike has been shown to improve:
- Gait and Balance
- Tremors and Rigidity
- Energy and Stamina
- Cognitive Function
More importantly, it would increase my mom's overall quality of life and reduce her risk of falling. This bike came highly recommmended by my mom's neurologist. More information on the Theracycle 300 bike can be found at https://www.theracycle.com/motorized-exercise-bike/theracycle-300/.
Unfortunately, my mom does not have the financial ability to buy this, and insurance doesn't cover it. We are asking for donations that would help my mom fight this aggressive diesease so that she can live a more normal life than she would be able to without this therapy. All money raised will go towards covering the bike, shipping, taxes, and GoFundMe fees. Donations of any amount will make a difference.
