Tommy's Wheel Chair Ramp
Donation protected
My name is Dana Birrell the proud father of Thomas Birrell. We are raising money to build our son a wheel chair ramp in order for him to get his powered wheel chair. Thomas is an almost eight year old with spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy who is the happiest boy you could ever have the opportunity to meet. Every day presents a great challenge for Thomas, however with his strong will and perseverance, he pushes himself beyond his limits on a daily basis. Building this ramp will set forward the motions for our insurance to cover Thomas' power chair and utlimately allow Thomas to become more independent, which will mean the world to him.
Thanks to Joe McDade with A.P. Inspections, we were able completely plan and itemize the building of this ramp down to the number of washers needed. We have started contacting local contracting companies for unusable scrap wood (generally wood that is cut too short for their uses) to help dramatically cut the costs of this project. Any leftover funding will be donated to Colerain Elementary school in Columbus City Schools. Colerain and bi-weekly therapy have helped Thomas overcome many great physical challenges over the past 3 years, and we hope that many other children with special needs will have the opportunity to attend. All labor towards building this ramp is being donated by friends and family.
Thomas, myself, Anna and his brother and sisters will be eternally greatful for every donation we receive, no matter how small, even if it's simply sharing this project for your friends and family to see. We look forward to Thomas getting his power chair and becoming more independent, as we know this will raise his self esteem dramatically.
Attention Columbus area contractors or anyone with scrap lumber:
We are looking for the following construction materials that would generally be considered scrap wood:
2x4, 2x6, and 2x8 42" or greater.
4x4's ranging from 10" all the way up to 39"
Any material that can be cut down and be used as a hand railing.
Our deadline to complete this funding project is July 10th. Please read on to get to know Thomas a little bit better!

Thomas after his track and field day at school.

Thomas enjoying the slide, even though he's terrified when he gets to the top.

Tommy learning about space at his school's COSI visit,

Daddy and Thomas after Tommy had some chocolate!

Thomas, with his brother and sister on his 4 wheeler!
